Text Messaging Terms of Service

These Text Messaging Terms of Service ("SMS Terms") govern Vanguard University's use of SMS and MMS text messaging to communicate with prospective students, current students, alumni, donors, event registrants, and other individuals who have provided a mobile phone number to the university. By providing your number and opting in to text communications, you agree to these terms.

These SMS Terms should be read alongside our Website Privacy Policy, available at vanguard.edu/privacy. Where the two documents address the same topic, the more specific provision controls.

1. Who Sends These Messages

Text messages are sent by or on behalf of Vanguard University, 55 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626. Depending on the program or service, messages may originate from a dedicated short code, a toll-free number, or a local long code assigned to the university or one of its authorized vendors.

Vanguard University uses third-party messaging platforms to deliver some communications. Those vendors are bound by contract to use your information only for the purpose of delivering university messages and to maintain appropriate security standards.

2. Types of Messages We Send

Depending on how you opted in and what programs you are associated with, you may receive text messages in one or more of these categories:

  • Admissions and enrollment: application status updates, document reminders, enrollment deadlines, and orientation information
  • Academic and student services: registration reminders, financial aid notifications, and advising follow-ups
  • Campus events: invitations, registration confirmations, and day-of reminders for visits, open houses, and university events
  • Emergency and safety alerts: time-sensitive notices related to campus safety, weather, or other urgent situations
  • Alumni and donor engagement: event invitations, giving campaign updates, and reunion announcements
  • General university news: announcements of broad interest to students, families, or the campus community

Not all message types apply to every recipient. The messages you receive reflect the programs and services you have engaged with and the consents you have provided.

3. How to Opt In

You may opt in to university text messaging in any of the following ways:

  • Submitting a form on vanguard.edu that includes a mobile number and a checkbox or disclosure indicating consent to receive texts
  • Providing your mobile number verbally or in writing to a Vanguard admissions counselor, event coordinator, or other university representative, with an indication that you agree to receive texts
  • Texting a keyword to a university short code or number as part of a specific program or campaign

Consent to receive text messages is not a condition of admission, enrollment, employment, or any other benefit from Vanguard University.

4. Message Frequency

Message frequency varies by program and time of year. During active recruitment periods or near major university events, you may receive more frequent messages. Outside of those windows, messages are infrequent.

Emergency and safety alerts are sent as needed, regardless of other messaging preferences, to all individuals for whom the university holds a current mobile number and who have not explicitly opted out of all university communications.

5. Rates and Charges

Vanguard University does not charge for text messages. However, your mobile carrier's standard message and data rates apply to every message you send and receive. If you are unsure about your plan's messaging costs, check with your carrier before opting in.

6. How to Opt Out

You can stop receiving text messages from Vanguard University at any time. The simplest way is to reply STOP to any message we send. You will receive one final confirmation message and no further texts from that number or program.

You may also opt out by:

  • Contacting privacy@vanguard.edu with your name, mobile number, and a request to be removed
  • Calling (714) 556-3610 and asking to be removed from text communications
  • Visiting the communications preferences page in your student or applicant portal, if applicable

Opting out of text messages does not remove you from email or postal mail communications. To manage those separately, see the opt-out section of our Website Privacy Policy. Note: If you opt out and later provide your mobile number again through a new form submission or enrollment action, you may be re-enrolled in messaging for that specific program. You can opt out again at any time.

7. How to Get Help

If you have questions about a message you received or need help with your messaging preferences, reply HELP to any university text message. You can also reach us at privacy@vanguard.edu or (714) 556-3610.

8. Your Mobile Number and Privacy

Vanguard University does not sell, rent, or share your mobile number with third parties for their own marketing purposes. Your number may be shared with the vendors we use to deliver text messages, and those vendors are contractually prohibited from using it for any other purpose.

Mobile numbers are stored securely and subject to the same data protection practices described in our Website Privacy Policy. If you would like to update or remove your mobile number from our records, contact the Office of the Registrar (current students), University Advancement (alumni and donors), or privacy@vanguard.edu.

9. Supported Carriers

University text messages are supported on most major U.S. carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, Boost, U.S. Cellular, and others. Carrier support for short code messaging may vary. Vanguard University is not responsible for messages not received due to carrier limitations, signal issues, or device settings.

10. Changes to These Terms

We may update these SMS Terms as our messaging programs evolve or as legal requirements change. When we do, the revised terms will be posted at vanguard.edu/sms-terms with a new effective date. Continued participation in university text messaging after a revision is posted constitutes acceptance of the updated terms. If a change is material, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you in advance.
