Since launching First to VU, our first-generation advocacy program, we have discovered that 51% of our full-time faculty—as well as our University President—are first-generation students. This gives us great insight into the reason our growing first-generation student population is succeeding. The understanding that grows from shared experiences, along with the inspiration students gain when facing challenges and seeing all you have already overcome, is invaluable.
