Jesse Miranda Center for Hispanic Leadership

History of Dr. Jesse Miranda

Dr. Jesse Miranda often called those around him to live with “hearts on fire and minds ablaze”—deeply committed to God, God’s people, and lifelong learning. Inspired by this vision, the Jesse Miranda Center was established at Vanguard University in 2000, marking a pivotal step in the university’s journey toward becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and advancing intercultural student engagement.

Dr. Miranda’s presence on campus was a profound gift to the Vanguard community both in and out of the classroom. In recognition of his leadership and scholarship, he was honored as a Distinguished Professor during the 2006–2007 academic year.

In 2015, Vanguard University achieved official designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and received its first Title V grant—milestones that built upon the foundational work of the Jesse Miranda Center.

Though the Center has been led by several directors over the years, Dr. Miranda’s vision remained central until his passing in 2019. Today, the Jesse Miranda Center continues to equip students, faculty, and staff to lead with cultural competence and clarity within the Hispanic context, both on campus and through strategic partnerships with churches and community leaders, advancing sustainable community development.
