The BA in English offers students a field of study that results in a well-rounded understanding of the work and essential skills that prepare student for careers from the law to teaching, from the boardroom to the pulpit. 

Flexible Emphases

You can focus your study and pursue either a Creative Writing emphasis or a Literature and Textual Analysis emphasis. The program is flexible and provides opportunities for students to switch between emphases, or to explore all of the emphases without a loss of time in the program. 

Creative Writing Emphasis

The Creative Writing emphasis helps students develop the skills necessary to craft their original work in multiple genres. Classes include an introductory course in Creative Writing, and specialized workshops in Travel Writing, Playwriting, the Short Story, and Creative Nonfiction. where you’ll have the opportunity to share your poems, plays, fiction, and non-fiction with peers in a safe and nurturing environment under the guidance of an experienced and knowledgeable instructor. 

Literary & Textual Analysis Emphasis

The Literary and Textual Analysis emphasis ranges from foundational classes in American, British, and World literatures to specialized classes in Detective Fiction, American Diversity, and Lewis and Tolkien. Through the close reading and study of literature, you will develop your skills in literary analysis and textual interpretation.

Professional Opportunities

Students in the program benefit from a wide variety of internships ranging from teaching assistantships with English professors to writing internships in the publishing industry. These professional opportunities provide real world experience and opportunity for the practical application of teaching, writing, editing, or multimedia skills under direct supervision.
