Permits

California has a series of requirements for California permits to work in an assortment of positions available in early education. Whether you want to be an associate teacher, teacher, master teacher, site supervisor, or program director, the Vanguard has the early education classes you need to complete your education and apply for a California permit. Gaining education for the child development field is easy and you can work to obtain an entry level assistant permit by completing only two classes (in two and a half months).

Assistant Permit

Authorizes holder to care for and assist in the development and instruction of children in a child care and development program under the supervision of an Associate Teacher, Teacher, Master Teacher, Site Supervisor, or Program Director.

REQUIREMENTS

• Complete any 2 ECED courses (6 units)

Associate Teacher Permit

Authorizes holder to provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child care and development program, and supervise an Assistant, and an aide.

REQUIREMENTS

4 Classes (12 units) ECE including:

  • ECED 101 Child, Growth, and Development
  • ECED 103 Child, Family, and Community
  • ECED 106 Intro to Curriculum
  • Your choice of 1 additional ECED course

Teacher Permit

Authorizes holder to provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child care and development program, and supervise an Associate Teacher, Assistant, and an aide.

REQUIREMENTS

OPTION 1

24 units ECE including core courses (ECED 101, 103, 106)
Plus 16 General Education Courses (online or on campus)

*The Certificate Program would complete all of the necessary early education requirements for the Teacher permit.

OPTION 2

AA or higher in ECE or related field

Plus ECED 132 (3 units supervised field experience)

Master Teacher Permit

Authorizes holder to provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child care and development program, and supervise a Teacher, Associate Teacher, Assistant, and an aide. The permit also authorizes the holder to serve as as coordinator of curriculum and staff development.

REQUIREMENTS

OPTION 1

24 units ECE/CD including core courses (ECED 101, 103, 106)

  • Plus 16 units of General Education (online and on campus)
    Plus 6 Administration Units (ECED 121 & 123)
    Plus 2 adult supervision units (ECED 139)

*The Certificate Program would complete 8 of the courses required for the Master Teacher Permit.

OPTION 2

  • BA or higher (does not need to be ECE/CD related)
  • ECED 132 Early Education Practicum
  • 4 ECED Courses (12 units)
    • ECED 101 Child, Growth, and Development
    • ECED 103 Child, Family, and Community
    • ECED 106 Intro to Curriculum
    • Choice of ECED 108, 126, 135, or 137

Site Supervisor Permit

Authorizes holder to supervise a child care and development program operating at a single site; provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child care and development program; and serve as a coordinator of curriculum and staff development.

REQUIREMENTS

OPTION 1

AA (or 60 units) which includes:

  • ECED 101 Child, Growth, and Development
  • ECED 103 Child, Family, and Community
  • ECED 106 Intro to Curriculum
  • Your choice of 5 additional ECED courses

ECED 139 Adult Supervision & Mentoring
ECED 121 Administration of Early Education Programs I
ECED 123 Administration of Early Education Programs II

*The Certificate Program would complete 8 of the courses required for the Site Supervisor Permit.

OPTION 2

  • BA or higher (does not need to be ECE/CD related)
  • ECED 132 Early Education Practicum
  • 4 ECED Courses (12 units)
    • Required: ECED 101, ECED 103, ECED 106

OPTION 4

  • Teaching Credential (Multiple or Single Subject in Home Economics)

    • Choice of:ECED 108, ECED 126, ECED 135, ECED 132, ECED 137

Program Director Permit

Authorizes holder to supervise a child care and development program operating at a single site or multiple sites; provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children in a child care and development program; and serve as coordinator of curriculum and staff development.

BA degree or higher (does not need to be ECE/CD related)
11 ECED Courses* (33 units):

  • ECED 101 Child, Growth, and Development
  • ECED 103 Child, Family, and Community

  • ECED 123 Administration of Early Education Programs II

Note: Vanguard provides the early childhood education classes required by California. In order to apply and receive a California permit, you must do so through the state. To ensure your classes will meet state requirements, we always recommend you check with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
