The entire Vanguard University community mourns the loss of music pioneer and renowned arranger and conductor, Ralph Carmichael.
Ralph Carmichael was a Vanguard alumnus, former head of the Music Department, and one of the driving forces in the creation of contemporary Christian music. His professional work and influence spanned church and gospel music, compositions for the biggest names in music, and esteemed film scores, to name a few.
Ralph Carmichael lived a life that embodies the very name of his alma mater. Indeed, his life and work was at the forefront – advancing and leading the way in new developments in music across genres. His creative genius was realized while he was still a student at then Southern California Bible College (SCBC), where Ralph began to produce a local weekly TV music program featuring many fellow SCBC students called “The Campus Christian Hour” – which would go on to win an Emmy Award. He would continue to commit his talents to the glory of Christ.
We lift up the Carmichael family in our prayers and will honor the life and legacy of Ralph Carmichael; and we trust that his influence will be felt for generations to come.
