This is Amanda Lau.

Amanda Lau is an Associate Professor of Nursing Pre-Licensure and a registered nurse. She is a Vanguard alumna whose passionate about teaching in the classroom and serving her community at Hoag Orthopedic Institute, Irvine. Her parents immigrated to the United States from China, passing on a multicultural foundation for Amanda. She is fluent in Cantonese and English. Her journey in health care, began when she discovered her passion for patient care.

" One of the rewards of working as a nurse is being able to interact with people who need your help. I get to meet and talk with patients who are genuinely thankful for your time and work. You are making a difference in people's lives which is a great feeling. Unfortunately, my grandpa was in the hospital when he was sick. There, I was able to see how well the nursing staff took care of him which, was one of my inspirations for nursing."

Lau graduated with a bachelor's of science in nursing from Vanguard'20. She recognizes the difficulties for some learning the science behind the field. She encourages students to utilize the community around them and lean on the professor for guidance. In her experience, she found that all of her classes and studying paid off. After graduating, Amanda moved back to her family's home in Santa Rosa, before resettling in Newport Beach. There, she received a job with Hoag.

" I work with orthopedic patients. Those, are patients who have complex spines, bad hips, and knees. In 2020, I was a new nurse hired during COVID, which was difficult. I love working for Hoag because it feels like family and they also have a holistic approach to medicine."

Amanda currently teaches second-semester nursing students at St. Joseph Hospital Orange. When she is not teaching or working, she spends her free time planning her wedding with her fiance. After their wedding, Amanda hopes to continue her education with a master's of science in nursing degree and transition full-time as a professor.

Vanguard is thankful for Amanda's in-field experience as a nurse and excited to see her plans for the future.
