Vanguard University student and United States Navy veteran Kimmie Kim ’27, was named a recipient of the 2025–2026 VFW-SVA Legislative Fellowship, a nationally competitive honor awarded jointly by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Student Veterans of America (SVA).

This fellowship program empowers recipients to participate in shaping public policy that impacts the military-connected community. As a fellow, Kimmie will join a cohort of student veterans from universities across the country to advocate for issues affecting veterans, military families, and the broader community.
The VFW-SVA Legislative Fellowship is designed to elevate the voices of student veterans in national policy discussions. Participants engage in advocacy training, attend leadership summits, and collaborate with congressional representatives during the VFW’s annual Washington Conference.
Kimmie, who earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Vanguard and is now in the Industrial and Organizational Psychology master’s program, will begin her fellowship experience with the SVA Leadership Institute in October, followed by NatCon 2026 in January, and legislative meetings on Capitol Hill in February 2026.
“It was a surprise to me!” said Kim on learning she was a fellowship recipient. “I don’t even feel like I did anything; God did it!”

Vanguard’s Office of Veterans Services praised Kim’s selection as a reflection of her strong leadership, academic excellence, and passion for service. “This is an amazing opportunity for Kimmie to continue the advocacy work for veterans she has been doing locally on a national level,” said Christopher Carroll, assistant director, Veteran Services, and Marine Corps veteran.
As a military-friendly institution, Vanguard University proudly supports a growing community of veterans and military-connected students through dedicated services, peer mentorship, and programs that foster both academic success and community engagement.
“Kimmie’s selection is a milestone for the Vanguard and a reminder of the incredible contributions our veterans continue to make on campus, in their communities, and across the country,” said Carroll.
