Vanguard University’s Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, along with its Justice Advocates Society, recognized two Orange County leaders for their extraordinary service on the front lines of public safety and community care during its annual “Frontline Heroes” ceremony today, April 20, 2026. Investigator Jeremy Johnson of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Gina Espinoza, senior social worker with the County of Orange Children and Family Services, were honored for their exceptional commitment to protecting and uplifting individuals and families across the county.
The ceremony included a presentation by the Newport Beach Police Department Color Guard, a message from Amy Reynolds, Orange County Senior Social Services Supervisor, and remarks from keynote speaker Patrick Grandy, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. Awards were presented to both honorees in front university students, faculty and staff, community members, representatives from the Costa Mesa City Council, and other local leaders.
“Today is about recognizing the individuals who show up every day to serve others, often in the most challenging circumstances,” said Thomas Ropel, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. “Investigator Johnson and Gina Espinoza represent the very best of Orange County, and we are honored to recognize their impact on the lives of so many.”
Known among colleagues as “The Bulldog,” Investigator Johnson has built a reputation for his relentless pursuit of justice in cybercrime cases. In 2025 alone, he recovered more than $3.5 million in stolen funds for victims, an extraordinary achievement in cases where financial losses are often permanent within hours. His work requires rapid coordination across financial institutions, law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions, often under intense time pressure. Beyond the numbers, victims consistently credit Johnson for his persistence, communication and compassion during some of the most stressful moments of their lives.
Espinoza, a senior social worker with Orange County Social Services, has spent 17 years advocating for foster youth and families navigating domestic violence, substance use and mental health challenges. Her work has helped provide stability, protection and long-term support to some of the county’s most vulnerable children. From supporting children at Orangewood Children and Family Center to developing service plans that help families reunify, she has built bridges across systems of care. She is also a dedicated advocate for youth at risk of exploitation and those with complex medical and developmental needs, ensuring every child receives the support they deserve.
Vanguard University’s “Frontline Heroes” annual awards highlights individuals across Orange County whose work exemplifies service, leadership and a commitment to supporting and protecting the community. Honorees are selected in collaboration with university and community partners.
