Vanguard University’s Theatre Department Tells the Poignant, Tender Story of Five Fiercely Proud Irish Sisters in Dancing at Lughnasa

Live, authentic Celtic music and laughter bring the vicissitudes of 1930’s Rural Ireland to life in a lively, restorative way at Vanguard University

Costa Mesa, CA, October 15, 2013 – Vanguard University’s highly acclaimed and award-winning department of theatre arts presents Dancing at Lughnasa, Brian Friel’s gripping story about five sisters who strive to lift each other’s spirits while struggling to get by in rural 1930s Ireland. The production is directed by Susan K. Berkompas and is presented in the Lyceum Theater on the Vanguard University campus, beginning October 25, 2013 and runningthrough November 3, 2013.

Childhood memories from autumn 1936 dance through Michael Evans’ mind as he remembers his mother and her four sisters in the kitchen of their quaint cottage nestled in a small rural Ireland town. The five fiercely proud and unmarried sisters share lively conversations, healing laughter, and spirited dancing, which all seem to defy the searing hardships of their daily life. Live harp, flute and violin music serve to create an authentic Celtic atmosphere.

The New York Post says of Dancing at Lughnasa, “This is no way a play to be missed – simply a wondrous experience. Experience it!”
