Coach Fred Litzenberger |
Costa Mesa, Calif. - Vanguard University announced today the resignation of Fred Litzenberger as men’s basketball coach, one week after completing his fourth season at the helm of VU’s men’s basketball program.
"Fred has worked extremely hard in an attempt to bring success to the men’s basketball program. He is one of the most knowledgeable coaches in the game of basketball," indicated Vanguard University Athletic Director, Bob Wilson. "Fred is a man of character and has been an advocate of our Gold Pride initiative. He has asked to be relieved from his position so he might pursue another opportunity to teach the game of basketball."
Joining the Lions in 2005-06 as an Associate Head Coach, Litzenberger helped lead Vanguard to the NAIA National Tournament and to a 20-13 record. Taking over as head coach after the conclusion of the 2005-06 season, Litzenberger just finished his fifth season with the Lions after coming to Vanguard from a very successful ten-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon.
Including a 5-21 overall record this season, Litzenberger’s overall record was 39-75 at Vanguard with a conference mark of 27-53 in the very competitive Golden State Athletic Conference. His best season at VU came in his second season where the team finished 20-10 overall and tied for third place in the GSAC with a 13-7 record.
The search to fill the men’s basketball coaching position has already begun. The job description and application process can be viewed on line at www.vanguard.edu for interested candidates.
