Second Half Goals Raise No. 16 Eagles over Lions

Last Updated Oct 2009

Irvine, Calif. – Two second-half goals by the No. 16-ranked Concordia Eagles broke a scoreless GSAC men’s soccer contest wide open this afternoon in Irvine. CUI scored two unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes of play to notch a 2-0 victory over the visiting Vanguard Lions.

Tied 0-0 61 minutes into the game, the hosting Eagles used 30-yarder from Kyle Hollomon to break the scoring silence. Hollomon’s shot dropped in over the head and hands of VU goal keeper Trevor Herrera and into the upper corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Twenty-two minutes later the Eagles doubled their lead when Alex Picarelli scored an unassisted goal on a high shot from the left side.

Two goals would be enough for the Eagles as the Lions managed to put only two of their nine shots of the day on goal. CUI keeper Mike Radchuk tallied a save and the Eagle defense was credited with stopping VU’s other shot on goal.

Herrera had a pair of second half saves and the Vanguard defense also turned away one of the Eagles’ five shots on goal.

CUI improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in GSAC while the Lions slip to 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in GSAC.

Vanguard continues the GSAC schedule on Saturday when the Lions host No. 23 The Master’s College. The Mustangs sit alone atop the GSAC standings with a 6-0 record after defeating Azusa Pacific today. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Costa Mesa.
