Why Major in Spanish at Vanguard University?
High Quality
At VU, the standards of quality are high and the instruction excellent. The professors have extensive experience and academic backgrounds with most Latin American countries and Spain.
Cultural Experiences
Spanish is a great major for those who are interested in other cultures, enjoy travel, want to play on the international stage, have an interest in learning about our neighbors to the south, or want to do something interesting with their lives. It is excellent preparation for missionary work in Spanish-speaking countries, and it is almost essential preparation for teaching in public schools in Southern California.
Vanguard Education Abroad
Students in the Spanish major have the opportunity to participate in the VU Study Abroad Program in San Jose, Costa Rica. Students live with Costa Rican families in San Jose and study at the Centro de Investigaciones Culturales Estudios Linguisticos (CINCEL). Study at CINCEL will place emphasis on spoken Spanish and the development of cultural sensitivity with the goal of progress toward mastery of the language as spoken by university-educated native speakers. Corresponding reading comprehension and writing proficiency are also emphasized. VU students study abroad at this location with the same tuition and room and board costs that they would incur on campus at VU.
Spanish Minor
A minor is available in Spanish upon completion of 21 upper division units of Spanish courses and approval of the Chair of the Spanish Department.
