Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award: Previous Recipients

The faculty of the Department of Psychology select the recipient(s) of the Academic Achievement Award to honor the student or students within the department who have distinguished themselves academically. The award is named in honor of Dr. Shirley Albertson Owens, who served on the psychology faculty from 1989-2005. “Dr. SAO” modeled caring professionalism and encouraged students to pursue lifelong learning.
Psychology Academic Achievement Award 2014The Department of Psychology’s 2014 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to Kaleigh Husband, Amanda Ives, and Moneh Magdaleno!
Psychology Academic Achievement Award 2013The Department of Psychology’s 2013 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to Jordan Cleary, Kathryn Kuly, and Jennifer Swift!
Psychology Academic Achievement Award 2012The Department of Psychology’s 2012 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to co-recipients Olivia Sprenger and Aspyn Remington!
Psychology Academic Achievement Award 2011The Department of Psychology’s 2010 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to co-recipients Rachael Hicks, Raechel Menke, and Anne Miller!
Psychology Academic Achievement Award 2010The Department of Psychology’s 2010 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to co-recipients Vanessa Iacovelli and Cassandra Vargas!
Psychology Academic Achievement Award 2009The Department of Psychology’s 2009 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to co-recipients Dominique Castillo, Travis Wood, and Jacquline Ellis! Travis will continue his education in the Fall of 2009 in a Master’s program in Experimental Psychology at California State Universty San Marcos. After receiving his Master’s, Travis hopes to attain a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Even though Travis transferred into VU, he was able to integrate himself into the community. He was in ASB his junior year and an RA his senior year at VU. Travis participated in multiple missions trips in California and Mexico. His academic contributions include serving as research assistant and as a Teaching Intern. Travis graduated summa cum laude, with awards inluding the School of Psychology’s Dean’s Award, Delta Kappa, Psychology Savants, as well as the Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award.
Psychology Academic Achievement Award 2008The Department of Psychology’s 2008 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to co-recipients Rebekah Ahrens, Sarah Barbuto, and Esther Diaz! Psychology major Rebekah Ahrens graduates with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.93. Honors include membership in Psi Chi, Presidential Academic Scholarship each semester, and Psychology Savants. She was a Teaching Assistant for statistics and served as a volunteer in an after school program during her time at Vanguard. Rebekah plans to obtain her MS in Human Development and Family Studies. Psychology major Sarah Barbuto graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.89. Honors include Psi Chi membership, receiving the Presidential Academic Scholarship each semester, and being tapped into Delta Kappa. During her time at Vanguard, Sarah served as a teaching assistant for both Statistics and Abnormal Psychology while at the same time being involved in Student Life leadership as an ASB officer for two years and as a Residence Assistant for one year. Sarah plans to pursue a doctoral degree in Developmental Psychology. Psychology major Esther Diaz graduates with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.88. Honors include membership in Psi Chi and Psychology Savants. During her time at Vanguard, she worked as a student assistant in the career center and was a statistics tutor for undergraduate as well as SPS students. Esther plans to continue her studies within the field of psychology.

Psychology Academic Achievement Award 2006The Department of Psychology’s 2006 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to co-recipients Christine Schmitt and Jessica Lowe!
Psychology major Christine Schmitt graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.75, is a member of CAPS and Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology. Christine has been accepted to Arizona State University to obtain her MSW degree to further her career goals of working with troubled and at-risk teenage girls in group home settings.
aaa2005The Department of Psychology’s 2005 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award goes to co-recipients Sheryl Thomas and Suzanne Simons! Psychology major (and Religion minor) Sheryl Thomas graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.9, is a member of CAPS and Phi Theta Kappa. Sheryl is working at Autism Solutions for Kids doing Applied Behavior Ananlysis (ABA), working one-on-one with children with autism. Plans for the summer include volunteering at a home for women with eating disorders.



aaa2004Dr. K.J. Hummel presents the Department of Psychology’s 2004 Shirley Albertson Owens Academic Achievement Award to co-recipients Kellie Kenis and Aubrey Neitzling! Among Kellie‘s many accomplishments are the following: double major in Psychology and Sociology; 3.8 cumulative GPA; Dean’s List every semester; Presidential Academic Scholarship every semester; Teaching Intern for Theories and Principles of Learning; volunteer at Women Helping Women (a local non-profit organization helping women in transition). Aubrey has double majored in Psychology and Sociology, achieving a 3.8 cumulative GPA. Honors include membership in Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, Alpha Kappa Delta National Honor Society in Sociology, Presidential Academic Scholarship each semester, and 2003-2004 recipient of the Mona Hoiland DeRouis Endowed Scholarship. Aubrey also served as a volunteer at Women Helping Women.
