Ninety-two students graduated with their B.A. in psychology this May! This large group included 38 graduates of the traditional psychology major and 54 graduates of the SPS psychology major! Immediate plans include graduate school for many, marriage for some, working for most, and hopefully a little relaxation for all!
Wendy is chair of the psychology program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, where she has worked for nearly nineteen years. She is presently living in Durban, South Africa, for six months on a Fulbright research fellowship to study risk and resilience in South African youth. She is looking at the role parents and families play in helping youth cope with stress.
Krista and husband Tovar were married July 17 in Camarillo. Krista is a file coordinator at Genesis Capital, a private money lending company, and is looking forward to starting coursework toward Marriage and Family Therapy licensure. They are youth leaders at La Iglesia Cristiana de Oxnard and also lead at the church’s English service.
Brittany and husband Douglas were married August 22. Brittany is a teacher at a private school for students with autism. The newlyweds make their home in Westminster and attend Beachpoint Church in Fountain Valley.
Jenni lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She is a mental health and chemical dependency counselor to federal and state criminal offenders. She is pursuing licensure in South Dakota and California. She hopes to return to California in the near future.
Erica is a marriage and family therapist intern at a private practice in Placentia. She is married to Anthony. They live in Fullerton and are looking forward to starting a family.
Edward received an MA in recovery ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2010. He has since earned a clinical pastor certificate from Methodist Hospital and volunteers as a hospital chaplain. Edward continues to oversee gang intervention trainings in Mexico and Los Angeles. Edward lives in Alhambra and is thankful for the experience and professional guidance of his Vanguard professors.
Leah Sloterbeek (2007, MS 2009) is Program Coordinator at Autism Solutions for Kids (ASK) in Irvine. ASK uses a team approach with a variety of behavioral techniques to work with children with autism and other disorders. Leah supervises and monitors the progress of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) programs, conducts training for staff members and parents, and is responsible for program development, grant development, and “Handle with Care” restraint training. Leah returned to Vanguard to lecture in a Theories and Principles of Learning class on “Pivotal Response Training.”
Congratulations to Sarah Barbuto (2008) on her acceptance to the Fuller School of Psychology APA-accredited PsyD program in Clinical Psychology! For the past three years, Sarah has worked as a dispatcher for the South Pasadena Police Department. In this role, Sarah dealt regularly with families dealing with trauma, mental health issues, and a wide range of other personal crises. Sarah now will draw on that experience as she begins Fuller’s PsyD program!
Renee Moreno ’06 is an occupational therapist, heading a department at Centre for Neuro Skills in Encino, CA. Centre for Neuro Skills is a nationally recognized inpatient/outpatient program for people with traumatic brain injuries. “I absolutely love my job!”
