Dear Alumni, Donors, and Friends of Vanguard University,
As the university grows, leadership changes were recently announced in the administration. As close partners in both financial support and prayer, we wanted to share these exciting new changes that will continue to further the mission and legacy of Vanguard University.
Kelly Kannwischer has been strongly serving as the vice president for university advancement since 2010. Kelly will continue to serve the university, now in the role of vice president for administration and public affairs. In this new, vital role, Kelly will remain working at the cabinet level, providing administrative and planning leadership to university operations. Kelly will also support and enhance the university’s ability to achieve its core mission by maintaining outstanding facilities and infrastructure, which includes effective and efficient support services for students, faculty, and staff. In addition, the VP for administration and public affairs role includes promoting and managing the university’s brand through marketing and communications strategies.
Justin McIntee `98, MBA `08, who has been serving Vanguard as associate vice president for development and campaign management since 2012, will assume the role of vice president for university advancement. Moving forward, Justin will lead the development team and alumni relations on campus, providing strategic leadership for the university’s advancement plan – this includes development, donor and alumni relations, and all campaign activities. Before Justin returned to Vanguard in 2012, he served as director of major gifts at Mission Hospital. Justin will lead the advancement team as a proud two-time alum of Vanguard, with a Bachelor of Arts and Masters in business administration.
Kelly and Justin will continue to work closely together to engage our alumni, friends and supporters to the life of the university.
Jeremy Moser `97, MBA `04, will now be serving Vanguard University as chief financial officer. Jeremy is responsible for banking, budgeting, insurance, investments and risk management at Vanguard, overseeing human resources, accounting operations and fiscal management. In addition to being a former university trustee, Moser has served as manager of global financial planning and forecasting at Capital Group as well as on audit committees and financial boards throughout Southern California. Moser is a two-time Vanguard alum, with a Bachelor of Arts in accounting and finance, and Masters in business – organizational leadership.
“I am excited to announce these new cabinet-level positions, which support the university’s goals of equipping each student for a Spirit-empowered life of Christ-centered leadership and service,” said Dr. Michael Beals, Vanguard University president. “We have a strong team as we enter the New Year at Vanguard.”
In this new season at Vanguard University, we are grateful so much – our continued top rankings in prestigious lists such as Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, and Christian Colleges of Distinction, a Spirit-empowered graduating class of 2015, and alumni, donors and friends of the university – just like you.

Mid-January, the campus fills with students after a good break, ready to engage in Vanguard life again!
We also gain new students each spring and our Spring Welcome Weekend, January 10th-13th, is Vanguard’s way of introducing incoming students to Vanguard’s numerous resources and the campus community. Welcome, new students! I pray this weekend will be the start of lifelong friendships and learning for you!
Alumni Weekend is fast approaching, February 1st and 2nd! Vanguard students will perform in our very own VU’s Got Talent. There will be opportunities to reunite with old classmates and learn how Vanguard alumni are changing the world. Alumni awards include: Alumnus of the Year: Ron Bueno ’90, Career Achievement Award: Bill ’67 and Nancie (Pearson) ’66 Carmichael, Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Isaac Canales ’74, Young Alumnus of the Year: Jason Lankow ’03. There will also be a VU versus BIOLA basketball game. Go, Lions! Children of VU alum can participate in sports camps led by VU athletics and there will also be a 5K to raise money for Mercy Doyle, a meaningful event for the whole family. We hope you will be able to join us!
Another alumnus getting attention for changing the world is Olivia Klaus (’99). Olivia directed and produced Sin by Silence, a documentary about the first inmate-led battered women’s group in the US prison system. Sin by Silence has won numerous film festival and advocacy awards, and has been featured in People Magazine and CNN. Recently Olivia Klaus became the recipient of the Mary Byron Project “Celebrating Solutions” awards. This prestigious award honors innovative U.S. programs that demonstrate promise in ending the generational cycle of domestic violence. Read more here.
Vanguard alumni are living endowments of Christ’s presence in a broken world. New students come to Vanguard each semester and through their education and life in community here are equipped for lives of Christ-centered leadership and Spirit-empowered service. It is an honor to be engaged in this great work with you!

The Vanguard community is at work in so many critical issues at home in southern California and abroad! My heart swells when I think of all the ways God is using Vanguard to work with Him in the world!
Vanguard’s women’s soccer program won their first-ever Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) championship title by going undefeated in conference play! They also won the GSAC tournament championship and earning their highest NAIA ranking ever at #2 in the nation. To read more about these incredible young women on their journey to the elite eight, visit the Athletic Department. GO, LIONS!
Merry and bright are the words to describe our Fantasia concerts this year! What a warm way to invite our community into the true joy of the season: God makes peace with men through his gift to the world, Jesus!
This year, the Veterans Club is taking the initiative to join with Max’s Love Project and the Walter Reed Military Hospital to provide toys for military families and child cancer patients. The level of passionate and devoted servant leadership in this student-led club is a beacon on campus and in the community. To learn more about this and other services of and to veterans, visit our Veterans Resource Center.
Our Global Center for Women and Justice held a Solidarity Sleep Out to raise awareness about resources for homeless young people. Homeless youth are the “low hanging fruit” for human traffickers. A trafficker will approach one out of every three kids within 48 hours of running away from home. Vanguard was privileged to partner once again with Solidarity Sleep Out and Live2free to better communicate to these loved children of God how precious they are to the Father. Vanguard students and others in the community slept on Heath Lawn November 18th. To learn more about this and the upcoming annual Ensure Justice Conference, visit the Global Center for Women and Justice website.
Fall is the time of year when students are invited to consider going on a Summer Missions Trip. Approximately one hundred students will travel with our various mission teams this summer. We hope to send Vanguard students as the heart, hands, and feet of Christ to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Ethiopia, Fiji, Honduras, Ireland, the Middle East, Mozambique, Northern Asia, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Senegal, and Tanzania. See our Summer 2013 Missions Trips and the missions we will partner with here. Undoubtedly, every student will be forever impacted by this experience that so deeply fits Vanguard’s mission to equip students for Spirit-empowered lives of Christ-centered leadership and service. I anticipate with joy the ways God will use this summer to inspire, clarify, and in some cases, radically change the direction of the lives of our students forever!
As I look at all Vanguard University is currently doing in the community and in the world, I am reminded of the great power that exists in the body of Christ when we are unified under Christ’s leadership. He came to save us and the world. What a gift it is to be with Him and you in this work!
God bless you and God bless Vanguard,
Dr. Carol Taylor
Amber, cherry red and coffee colored leaves line campus walkways! We are reminded by nature that the world swiftly changes but history reminds us that God orchestrates all of life’s seasons toward new life. This November we have great things to look forward to.
I hope you will join me for our annual Christmas Fantasia concert this year. One performance is at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on November 29th and another is at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on November 30th. Listening to these well-trained voices and a full orchestra in these elegant venues is such a delightful way to begin this season of celebrating Jesus. For more information and to order your tickets, please visit vanguard.edu/fantasia.
It is with gratefulness and joy that we commissioned Dr. Mike Beals, an ordained Assemblies of God minister, to the position of University Dean of Spiritual Formation and University Pastor on October 18, 2012 in chapel. Dr. Beals has served in full-time ministry for more than thirty years. He earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from Vanguard as well as a Master’s and a PhD from Fuller Theological Seminary. He also taught Vanguard students from 1991-2009 with energy and devotion. Mike’s deep commitment to living life in the Spirit, his experience and education, and his love for Vanguard equip him well for this pastoral role to us all: students, faculty and staff. We are glad he’s here!
On November 9th at 3 pm, in our recently updated Veterans Courtyard, Vanguard will honor veterans and their service to our country. There will be a reception and a presentation by Chris Kupitz, a student veteran with two deployments to Iraq. For more information, please contact Lindsay Bodwell at (714) 966-5458 or via email at email@example.com.
Pre-VU is November 12th and 13th! This is a great event for allowing families to experience the community and life that makes Vanguard a top-ranked school (U.S. News and World Report). More than two hundred prospective students and parents are expected this year. For more information, visit undergraduate admissions.
Please be sure to stop by our booth at Youth Convention November 23rd-24th. We love to tell these students, filled with zeal for God, about the education and training Vanguard University can offer them for a life of Christ-centered leadership and service.
May your hearts swell this Thanksgiving as you experience the depth of the resources of the Holy Spirit within the changing seasons of your own life.
God bless you and God bless Vanguard,
Dr. Carol Taylor
