Campus Update October 2012

It is a pleasure to provide an update as we are starting our 2012-2013 academic year.  We began this year with the good news that we were again ranked among the Best Colleges in the West by US News and World Report.  We were ranked #10 for best regional colleges in the west.  We were also one of the 19 California schools featured in the 2012-2013 Colleges of Distinction.

The big news on campus this fall is our strong enrollment and campus improvements.  Our total enrollment this fall is 2,213 with 1,464 traditional undergraduate students, 481 adult degree completion students, and 268 graduate students.  This represents a 4.63% increase from last year and a 21.06% increase from fall 2009. The level of enrollment growth over the past four years is remarkable.  These past years we have often cited the African proverb – when you pray, move your feet.  The Vanguard community has done both, and we are grateful for the students that God has brought to Vanguard University.

Over the summer we continued the remodel of the Huntington Hall dormitory and completed the 3rd and 4th floors.  We have also been remodeling a significant portion of the O. Cope Budge Library building.  We have improved this facility with additional safety, improved air quality, student group study rooms, a university archive office, as well as a new green room and costume storage area for the adjacent Lyceum Theater.

There were several additional projects completed over the summer.  In June we dedicated our new Veterans Courtyard of Honor, a complete renovation of the Scott courtyard.  This is now a beautiful space with a fountain memorial wall.  When not used for official gatherings, it is a great space with tables and umbrellas where members of the community can gather.  The Price Room off of the cafeteria was renovated, creating a nice meeting space for the Board and other events on campus.  There was also a lot of painting this summer from Needham Chapel, the cafeteria, trim of three dorms and Gym.  The bookstore got a new floor along with a refinish of the Gym floor.

Newport Mesa Church has taken on a major renovation project for their sanctuary, which means that we are holding chapel in a large meeting tent for the first part of the semester.  These are Vanguard’s tent meeting days.

We launched our new academic year with a series of student leader retreats and a faculty gathering that included a spiritual retreat day at the Mission at San Juan Capistrano.  We introduced our new Dean of Spiritual Formation and University Pastor, Dr. Michael Beals.  We also welcomed our AG Missionary in Residence for this year, Steve Slater.  In mid-September, a record number of 640 students went out in the community for a day of service as part of Vanguard’s City Serve.  Teams of students served in a wide variety of areas from the Dream Center to Teen Challenge to homeless shelters to skate parks to local beaches.

We have had growth in a number of majors with our top five being Business, Psychology, Communication, Kinesiology, Liberal Studies, and Religion.
