Campus Update September 2012

What a joy to launch a new academic year with a record enrollment and a number of significant campus improvements.

We started off with our annual Welcome Week led by Vanguard’s Frontline – 50 student leaders who our new students. It’s our special way for new students to feel part of the Vanguard community and give them helpful information and resources as they begin their college career. For more information about Welcome Week click here.

Students returned to campus to find a number of improvements and projects still in progress.  The O. Cope Budge Library received a major renovation that included the complete removal and restoration of the loft floor and new study rooms and archives space.  In the process, two rooms were created to support theater.  The Price Room was completely renovated to provide a quality space off the Café for events with food service.  The Board of Trustees were the first to use the improved space at their June meeting and began with a prayer of dedication for the work and many conversations that will take place here.  We continued the renovation of Huntington Hall with floors three and four completed this summer.  Fresh paint can be seen in many locations across campus along with other improvements like a new floor and reorganized interior in the bookstore.  And students will now enjoy the Veterans Courtyard of Honor in the heart of the Scott Building with its nice tables and sound of running water.

We are starting the year with chapels in a tent as Newport Mesa Church completely renovates its sanctuary.  You are welcome to join us for some good tent meetings!

This fall we will launch a $6million capital project to expand and complete further renovations to the Scott building.  We are excited to see one of our landmark buildings expanded and restored in a way that will provide much needed additional classroom space, extended courtyards and also provide a real front door to the campus.  In the near future, we will be adding details about the project along with drawings.

On September 6, Vanguard will host a special Scholarship Donor Reception. The reception honored all the student scholarship recipients and the gracious donors who help make their education possible. It is because of our generous donors that each student can pursue their educational goals at a university whose purpose is to equip them for a Spirit-empowered life of Christ-centered leadership and service. On September 15, Vanguard will participate in City Serve, a wonderful annual tradition that began in 2004 and continues to provide an opportunity for students to learn about and participate in addressing the needs of Vanguard’s surrounding communities.  The event has grown tremendously and last year over 400 students, faculty and staff joined the efforts to volunteer with 40 non-profit organizations in various service projects. Projects included helping local churches, working at food banks and shelters, caring for the homeless, joining Habitat for Humanity projects, and providing childcare for needy families. For more information, please click here.

This fall we are also continuing our commitment to host a Missionary-in-Residence and welcomed Steve Slater to campus.  Steve is an Assemblies of God missionary who served most recently at the South Pacific Bible College in Fiji.

What a blessing it is to invite guests on campus for Family Weekend. It is a great time for Vanguard to celebrate families and the loving investment they continually make in the lives of their students. Taking place September 21 and 22, Family Weekend has a variety of special events planned and will be a meaningful time for parents to connect with their students on campus and experience some of the campus life.. Family Weekend is a great way for families to encounter Vanguard through their student’s eyes.  For further information click here.

My prayer is that we will live fully our mission to equip students for a Spirit-empowered life of Christ-centered leadership and service.

God Bless you and God Bless Vanguard,

Dr. Carol Taylor
