MARY WICKMAN, PhD, RN

Director of Nursing | Professor of Nursing

Mary Wickman has extensive background and experience in nursing education, both administratively and as a faculty member. Wickman comes to Vanguard from California State University, Fullerton where she developed and directed the prelicensure nursing programs. She also served as chair of the nursing department at Mount St. Mary’s College, and was faculty and directed the RN program at Santa Ana College for 15 years. Her research interests and areas of expertise include nursing education, adolescent risk behaviors, substance abuse treatment, and managed care. Wickman served for 21 years in the Navy Reserve Nurse Corps and is a retired Captain.

JULIA WILSON, DNP, RN, FNP-BC

Julia Wilson has an extensive background in nursing and has been in practice in Irvine as a nurse practitioner since 1997.  She has worked for over 30 years as a registered nurse at Hoag Hospital in the areas of cardiology, maternal child health, and medical surgical nursing areas.  She has been a full-time faculty member at Vanguard since 2008, and previously taught at Golden West College for over six years.

MARY “BRIGID” BARRETT, MSN, RN

Brigid Barrett has an extensive background in nursing and has held positions as a staff nurse, nursing instructor, and nurse educator.  Her fields of interest are integrative health care, resiliency/self-care in health care workers, and wellness nurse coaching.  Ms. Barrett teaches primarily in the MSN program and brings a wealth of administrative knowledge and experience to the classroom and to her students.

 Dr. Callis

Annette Callis, PhD, MSN, RN, CNS

Associate Professor of Nursing

Annette has extensive background in nursing education.  She is a Clinical Nurse Specialist and a longstanding member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.  She developed the critical care curriculum and the patient simulation program at Biola University’s nursing department, where she was an associate professor and served for over 15 years.  She is also an End of Life Nursing Education Consortium Educator with published research on moral distress in critical care nurses related to life support decision-making.  Other of her published works are on the topics of advance directives, end of life care related to spiritual beliefs, empowering families at end of life, the effect of technology on the dying experience and innovative designs for classroom learning. Dr. Annette Callis married in 2014.  Prior to 2014, her publications are under the name of Dr. Annette Browning.

Amanda Firestone brings many years of clinical nursing experience as well as a passion for nursing education.  Amanda has 13 years of nursing experience in the following fields:  Telemetry, Emergency, Critical Care Transport, and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation.  Amanda has taught in Pre-licensure, RN-BSN, and Graduate Nursing Programs.  Amanda’s passion is bringing creativity into the classroom and providing a safe and fun atmosphere to learn together.

TERESA SIMBRO, MSN, RN, CHSE

Teresa has over 30 years experience in  nursing, predominantly in Pediatrics and Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care. She has a strong passion for nursing education and has been full time faculty in the RN program at Santa Ana College since 1998. For the past 10 years of her educational tenure she has been creator and Coordinator of the Nursing Simulation Lab, where she can create real-life scenarios to help students learn and improve their nursing skills, communication techniques, and decision-making in a safe environment for both patients and students. She has her international certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator.

  CAROL HAHN, MSN, RN

Carol Hahn has an extensive background in nursing and nursing education.  She has over 30 years clinical experience in gerontology, orthopaedics, and dementia care.  She is a Certified Orthopaedic Nurse.  She enjoys teaching and has taught in community, hospital, and university settings.  Carol is also a Registered Yoga Teacher and Certified Personal Trainer and uses an integrated and holistic approach to help promote optimal health.
