The Vanguard University Orchestra is the largest instrumental ensemble sponsored by the Department of music. The orchestra is committed to excellence in music performance and is well received by all audiences due to its wide range of orchestral repertoire including classical, popular, sacred, and traditional & contemporary Christian music. The orchestra performs on campus, schools, churches and concert halls throughout the academic year.
The Vanguard University Orchestra, directed by Mildred Yi, belongs to a Consortium of Irvine-Costa Mesa University Orchestras along with University of California Irvine Symphony Orchestra, directed by Stephen Tucker, and Concordia University Sinfonietta, directed by Jeff Held.
Mildred Yi is the Director of University Orchestra and Coordinator of Music Education and Chamber Music at Vanguard University. In addition to teaching coursework in music education, she serves as faculty advisor for VU Collegiate Chapter of National Association for Music Educators, and as a member of Teacher Education Advisory Council of VU Graduate School of Education. Her public school teaching experience is comprised of instrumental and vocal music instruction in Northern California school districts, including the Performing and Fine Arts Academy at Natomas Charter School in Sacramento, CA. Presently, Mildred Yi is a university partner for the Newport-Mesa School District Arts Commission, and guest conducts and adjudicates high school orchestras in Southern California.
Mildred Yi received a B.A. in Music from the University of California at Berkeley, a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music through UCLA and Fresno State University, and a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from San Francisco State University. Currently, she is pursuing an Ed.D in College Teaching of Music and Music Education at Columbia University Teachers College in NYC.
