Graduate Education’s Dr. Sylvia Kane is featured in the latest edition of Vanguard Magazine! The two-page article on mentoring starts on page 26. Dr. Kane’s wisdom and insight go far beyond the classroom and Vanguard University is richer because of her experience.
Graduate Education celebrated their annual end-of-year Teacher Education Advisory Council (TEAC) banquet. The celebration acknowledged the accomplishments of advanced student teachers ready to start their teaching career. Along with Graduate Education faculty and staff, Master Teachers and University Supervisors were there to congratulate the students.
This past April, Dr. Sylvia Kane attended the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. The theme for this year’s conference was Pubic Scholarship to Educate Diverse Democracies. Dr. Kane had the privilege of attending many sessions related to Teacher Education and professional practice in increasingly diverse democracies in education. She also chaired a session and attended a Special Plenary Address by Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady of the United States. The session was titled, Operation Educate the Educators, which focused on recognizing and supporting military-connected students through university-based research, community partnerships, and teacher education programs.
Vanguard University’s Graduate Program in Education recently went through a four-day visit from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) to reaffirm the accreditation of its teaching credential program. From April 6-9, 2016, the five-member CTC team reviewed all of the program’s standards and documentations, as well as interviewing over 200 constituents of Vanguard’s teaching program.
The unanimous recommendation from the visiting CTC members was to grant our program a full seven-year Accreditation! As you might imagine, the faculty and staff of the Graduate Program in Education were elated! Contributions from faculty, staff, and our external community contributed greatly to this decision and our elation!
In late April, Dr. Jerry Ternes will attend the Commission on Accreditation (COA) session in Sacramento that will review Vanguard University’s program and make an official decision on the team’s recommendation. We would like to personally thank each person who contributed to this process for their ongoing commitment to Vanguard University’s Graduate Education and Teacher Credential Program!

Graduate Education has a new TPA Coordinator: Jennifer Tuttle. Teaching Performance Assessment is an important part of student teaching. “As of July 2008, California statute (Chap. 517, Stats. 2006) requires all candidates for a preliminary Multiple and Single Subject Teaching Credential to pass an assessment of their teaching performance with K-12 public school students as part of the requirements for earning a teaching credential.” (ctc.ca.gov)
Vanguard University welcomes back Teresa Dovel to Graduate Education! Teresa is the new Program and Accreditation Coordinator. Teresa has her M.A. in Education from Vanguard University and B.S. in Education from Abilene Christian University. She is well prepared to lead Graduate Education! Please give a warm “welcome back” to Teresa.
VU alumnus Mike Newcomb, seen here in a 1957 basketball game (he is #11), is also Graduate Education’s Lead University Supervisor to our student teachers. Next time you are in the Scott Building, take a moment at the top of the stairs to view some of our university history and how alumni are still giving back to their alma mater.
