A Message to the Class of 2016

Dr. George O. WoodDear President Beals and Graduates:

I keep my Dad’s old manual Royal Typewriter next to my computer at work.  I know most all of you who graduate today have never even seen a manual typewriter, let alone use one! The juxtaposition of the two at my desk is a constant reminder that life is full of change.

You are going through one of those changes today.  Commencement seems like an ending because today your leave classroom and the dedicated faculty, staff and administration; your college friends and a raft full of memories.  But, as you know, the very word commencement means beginning – you are commencing on the rest of your life.

You will experience far greater and faster changes in your lifetime than what prior generations have experienced. But, you will find one thing that does not change.  Keep Jesus as the central focus of your life.  He remains the constant.

On behalf of the family of more than 3 million Assemblies of God members in the United States, I wish you God’s very best! Heartfelt congratulations to you, Class of 2016!

For Christ and His Kingdom,

Dr.  George O. Wood

A Message to the Class of 2014

Dr. George O. WoodDear President Beals and Graduates:

I was a young man when an older friend prayed this for me, “Lord, help him to lay foundations strong enough to bear the weight you will later place on him.”

That prayer I share with you on this significant day of your completion of a degree and your commencement into what the Lord has yet for you.

You’ve taken the time to lay some strong foundations in your life. You leave the school today far better equipped than when you entered, and with a bunch of friends that you have made over these years.  Your faculty, administration, and fellow students have all sowed excellently into your life; and your family and friends have supported and cheered you on.

Now, go out and build on the strong foundation you have received here. Go with the Lord’s blessing and favor. You have only one life – so make it count!

On behalf of the Assemblies of God, heartfelt congratulations to you!

For Christ and His Kingdom,

Dr. George O. Wood

A Message to the Class of 2012

Dear Class of 2012:

On behalf of the Assemblies of God and myself personally, heartfelt congratulations on this significant day in your life.

First, you came to Vanguard University to RECEIVE.  Several years ago you left your comfort zone and came full of expectation to receive a great education and learn from the example of Christ-like professors.  You came also to make new friends.  Some of you even found a spouse.

Second, you stayed at Vanguard University to GROW.  You are not the same person you were [two,] three, or four years ago.  You persevered to the end.  Today you leave all the academic requirements behind and the great spiritual experiences you’ve had on this campus – as well as your many friends, some of whom will be friends for a lifetime.  You stayed in this place to grow.

Third, you leave to GIVE.  Your faith, character, and conduct have matured.  Now you leave in order to make a difference for Christ and His Kingdom.  You leave to serve Jesus, His Church, and His World. You have received much, now go forth and give much!

May the good favor of the Lord rest upon you all your days!

For Christ and His Kingdom,

Dr. George O. Wood
