Lions Go Faster and Higher at APU's Last Chance Qualifier

Azusa, Calif. - Today was the last chance for athletes to qualify for the NAIA Indoor National Championships to be held the first week in March in Johnson City, Tennessee. Morgan Rose was one of VU’s track athletes to take advantage of his opportunities at Azusa Pacific’s Last Chance Qualifier meet. Rose not only met the automatic qualifying standards, but he narrowly missed a new school record in the men’s 600 meter event.

Rose lowered his 600 meter time to 1:20.78 to beat the automatic qualifying standards for his event, making him the seventh VU athlete to qualify for the Indoor Championships. Rose’s time was just .12 slower than the school record for the 600m, which was set by Eric Van Aken in 2006 (1:20.66).

Aze Perkins and Mike Hartanov joined Rose on the men’s highlight list as the pair set new personal bests in their respective competitions. Perkins, who is already qualified for Indoor Nationals in the 60m hurdles, broke his own school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.16, knocking off .01 from his former mark. Hartanov met the Provisional Qualifying mark in the 1000 meter run, missing the automatic mark by only .38 and the school record by .21. Hartanov, who set a new PR with a time of 2:31.58, will have to wait to see if his time will be fast enough to earn an individual ticket to nationals.

On the women’s side, previously-qualified Ashley Rodriguez improved her own school record, set last week, with a new PR of 1:36.04 in the 600 meters. Kelsie Davis beat her personal record with a career-high leap of 5-3.75 in the women’s high jump. The effort meets the provisional standards and the height that VU's Burgandy Rhines jumped last year when she qualified to compete at the NAIA Indoor Meet.

Complete VU results are listed below as well as a link to complete meet results from the APU Last Chance Indoor Qualifier.

Vanguard has the Carl Rossi Relays coming up this Saturday, February 28th, followed by NAIA Indoor National Championships which are March 5-7, in Johnson City, Tennessee.
