#3 Vanguard sneaks by Westmont
Santa Barbara, Calif – NAIA third-ranked Vanguard University held off the Westmont College Warriors 5-4 this afternoon in GSAC women’s tennis action. The Lions came back from a 3-4 deficit, winning the final two singles matches for the one-point win. The deciding singles match had to be finished at another site due to darkness.
The Lions trailed 2-1 after doubles play with VU’s only win coming from number one pair Hana Jurcovicova and Damia Donkervoort (8-2). Vanguard cruised to straight set wins in the first two singles matches as Jurcovicova and Amy Brown recorded points for the Lions. After the Warriors picked up wins at the number five and six positions, it came down to Donkervoort at number three and freshman Tiffany Teerawat at number four.
Donkervoort pulled off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over Kristen Lee to bring the Lions even 4-4 in the match, putting all the pressure on Teerawat. Tied after two sets (6-0, 2-6), Teerawat’s match had to be moved when darkness fell. Tied 6-6 in the third set, Teerawat won the tiebreaker 7-3 for the 7-6 win, handing the Lions their fourth victory of the season.
Vanguard, 4-1 overall and in GSAC, is back on the road on Saturday at Hope International in Fullerton.
