Bryanna Gonzales

SENIOR • 5’4” • MIDFIELD • SAN PEDRO, CA

The athlete: Bryanna begins her second season as a Lion…one of two seniors on the roster…was an NAIA Scholar-Athlete as a junior at Vanguard…transferred to VU from El Camino College last year…played two seasons for coach John Britton at ECC and was a 2nd-Team All-Conference player at the JC level…graduated from South Torrance High School in 1999…Most Inspirational and Most Improved player…helped STHS earn a CIF Championship in 1998…has played soccer for 16 years…quick and scrappy player… hard worker…had off-season knee surgery…will be working to recover quickly…relentless in her efforts…hopes to be healthy enough to end her collegiate career on her terms.

The person:  Bryanna was born in Torrance, California on October 3, 1981…parents are John and Shannon Gonzales…has one brother and one sister…nickname is “Speedy Gonzales”…is a senior in Liberal Studies at Vanguard…loves to eat manicotti…enjoys watching the TV show “Friends”…favorite movie is “The Game”…favorite color is lavender and loves the numbers three and five…cheers for the Oakland Raiders…hobbies include surfing, snowboarding, and taking naps…enjoys spending time in Oregon…thinks greed is the biggest problem in the world…likes the camaraderie of her team…has learned to never take a moment for granted…playing soccer has taught her about perseverance, hard work, determination, and teamwork…plans to teach at the elementary level.

Her thoughts:  I picked Vanguard because it had a friendly, Christian atmosphere and a good soccer program.  I enjoy the other students and the location of Vanguard University.

 

Amber Waddle

AMBER WADDLE • # 2    
SENIOR • 5’7”• FORWARD • KAILUA-KONA, HI

The player:  Amber is the only four-year player on the 2003 women’s soccer team…has played in 41 games as a Lion…was a two-sport athlete at Makua Lani High School in Hawaii…two-time MVP for her soccer team…very athletic player…has played soccer for 13 years…earned a starting position last year…fourth-highest scorer in 2002…top-scoring returner from a year ago…will play the forward or midfield positions…good foot speed…great touch on the ball…continues to surprise her coaches and teammates with her learning curve…will take on the captain reigns as a senior…has calm demeanor and laid back sense of humor…her final season is bound to be her best.

The person:  Born Amber Grace on April 15, 1981 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to her parents Thomas and Catherine Waddle…has one younger sister who also plays soccer…teammates just call her “Waddle”…Psychology senior at Vanguard…loves to eat…favorite movie is “Last of the Mohicans”…enjoys watching the TV show “Friends”…prefers the number two and the color red…roots for the Tampa Bay Bucaneers…favorite place is Venice…hobbies are surfing, playing the guitar, eating, sleeping, and snowboarding……likes the fresh feet and new faces on the 2003 VU soccer team…has learned to never take a single day for granted….competing in athletics has taught her about discipline, teamwork, and perseverance…wants to become a Child Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist.

Her thoughts:   I felt Vanguard was where I was supposed to go and that it was right for me.  I love the friends I’ve made and the great teachers at VU.

JUNIOR 5’5” GOALKEEPER BREA, CA

The athlete:  Kim begins her third year of eligibility…played for Vanguard in 2000 and 2001…sat out in 2002 to study in England…1st team All-League selection at Brea Olinda High School before coming to VU…holds the record at BOHS for career shutouts…right-handed…has played soccer for 16 years…unexpected pick up for the Lions after the year off…recorded 24 saves and a shut out last year as a freshman…played in 10 games as a sophomore…will pad the goalkeeper position with needed depth…should give the Lions a boost as an experienced addition to the team.

The person:  Kimberlee was born in Arcadia, California on April 25, 1982 to her parents Michael and Cathy Becher…has three siblings who all play soccer…senior in Liberal Studies…likes to eat Italian food…favorite movie is “Pride And Prejudice”…loves the color green and the number one…doesn’t watch television…favorite book is the Bible…enjoys cooking, knitting, and traveling…would like to meet her future husband…has learned that her life is not her own and that it was bought at a price…athletics has taught her about teamwork, dedication, and discipline…wants to become an Elementary School Teacher.

Her thoughts:  I wanted a small private university, and I love the location of Vanguard.

Natalie Severson

NATALIE SEVERSON  •  #17   
JUNIOR   5’4”   DEFENDER     COARSEGOLD, CA

The athlete:  Natalie begins her first season with the Lions…transferred to Vanguard from Fresno City College…was an all-conference selection and scholar-athlete at FCC…also played one season at Fresno State University…graduated from Yosemite High School in 2001…two-time first team all-league high school player…team captain and academic all-league…two-sport athlete at YHS…has played soccer for 14 years…will see time at the central defender and marking back positions for the Lions…great foot skills…brings in DI experience from FSU…should earn a starting position and play a leadership role as a quality transfer…look for an immediate impact from Severson.

The person:  Natalie Marie was born in Thousand Oaks, California on February 23, 1983…parents are Rich and Gail Severson…is the youngest of four children…is majoring in Exercise Sports Science…sports hero is Lance Armstrong…likes to eat fruit and spend time at home…favorite TV show is “Friends”…loves the number two and the color blue…favorite movies are “The Wedding Singer” and “Gladiator”…enjoys snowboarding, wakeboarding, exercising, and swimming…thinks the biggest problem in the world is greed…competing in athletics has taught her about perseverance, and that the mind is stronger than the body…isn’t sure what career path she will choose.

Her thoughts:  I picked Vanguard because of the people, the atmosphere, small community, and the soccer coach.

The athlete:  Heather joins the Lions for her first season…transferred to VU from Bakersfield College where she played two seasons of volleyball…all-conference setter and MV offensive player at BC…2001 graduate of Stockdale High School…three-sport high school athlete…All-Area soccer player…Best Offensive Player as a senior at SHS…has played soccer for 15 years…right-footed…aggressive central midfielder…will help fill the shoes of last year’s seniors for VU…late addition in the recruiting process…will be a great asset in 2003…good sense of humor…all-around athlete.

The person:  Born on July 28, 1983 in Oxnard, California…Heather’s parents are Bill and Gayle Tape…has two older brothers…is a Liberal Studies student at Vanguard…favorite movie is “Old School”…likes to eat artichokes…enjoys watching “Friends” on TV…loves the color red…favorite number is seven…cheers for the New York Yankees…hobbies include water skiing, snow skiing, playing soccer, volleyball, and softball…would like to meet Jesus…thinks selfish people are the biggest problem in the world…has learned from life to trust in the Lord and He will see you through…competing in athletics has taught her to be competitive and willing to learn new things…wants to become an Elementary Teacher.

Debra Watson

The athlete:  Debra enters her third season of eligibility at VU…will probably be her last as she is due to graduate in the spring of 2004…a 2000 graduate of Hillcrest High School in Springfield, Missouri…three-sport HS athlete…earned MVP and Leadership awards for soccer at HHS…attended Evangel University in 2001 but did not play soccer…has played soccer for 13 years…right-footed forward…increased her role with the team last year…hard worker who isn’t afraid to sacrifice her body for the ball…scrappy player who will fight for the ball and cause havoc on other defenses…has made her mark as an integral part of the team…will do anything to make the Lions better…look for her best year ever.

The person:  Born Debra Joy on November 5, 1981 in Erie, Pennsylvania…parents are David and Rebecca Watson…has one brother and one sister…nickname is “D-Slash”…senior in Exercise Sports Science and Business Management…sports hero is Michael Jordan…is a Pittsburg Steelers fan…loves to eat Italian food…favorite movie is “Old School”…likes to watch “Friends” and “Seinfeld” on TV…loves the color blue…hobbies are working out, hanging out, and singing…believes that selfishness and bad attitudes are the biggest problems in the world…likes the brand new chemistry on this year’s women’s soccer team…has learned from life to put God first and everything else will fall in to place…athletics has taught her about perseverance, and that a good attitude will take you far…sees herself as a soccer mom, business woman, and a personal trainer in the future.

Her thoughts:  I came to VU to be a part of the soccer program and the Christian atmosphere.  I love my friends and the atmosphere at Vanguard.

The athlete:  Stacy begins her second and possibly final season with the VU women’s soccer program…is a senior academically…transferred to Vanguard from Colorado State University but did not play there…graduated from Air Academy in Colorado Springs in 2000…four-year varsity soccer in high school…played for coach Diane Shuek at Air Academy in the Metro League…two-sport high school athlete…has played soccer for 13 years…right-handed goalkeeper…team player…saw limited action in 2002 as the backup goalie…aggressive off her line…not afraid to sacrifice the body, good quality for a keeper…extremely hard worker on the field and in the classroom…strives for improvement daily…will increase her role tremendously this year.

The person:  Born Stacy Rae in Lansing, Michigan on September 30, 1981…parents are Brad and Paula Britton…oldest of five children…all of her siblings are involved in soccer…senior in Pre-Physical Therapy…sports hero is Landen Donovan…favorite movie is “Good Will Hunting”…loves to eat Chinese food…loves the number 10…favorite place is Colorado…roots for the Minnesota Vikings…likes the color blue and the TV show “Law and Order”…hobbies include reading, lifting weights, swimming, and watching movies…would like to meet Richard Simmons…feels the biggest problem in the world is lack of faith…has learned from life that all you need to be happy is family, a few friends, and faith…playing soccer has taught her the value of hard work and discipline…wants to become a Medical Doctor.

Her thoughts:  I came to Vanguard to be in a good Pre-Med program, be around good people, and be on a good soccer team.  The people here are amazing.

 

Ashley Deloach

The athlete:  Ashley enters her second season with the Lions…played every game as a freshman…second-leading scorer among returners for 2003…graduated from Ontario Christian High School in 2001…1st-Team All-League…2nd-Team All-CIF…leading scorer in high school…helped lead her team to two CIF Championships…two-sport high school athlete…has played soccer since she was six years old…forward with a great shot from either foot…is coming off a summer missions trip to Ireland with Athletes In Action…wonderful ball handler…beautiful shot…inspiration to her teammates…has persevered as a player despite major knee surgery two years ago…look for her to lead the Lions and cause big problems for opponents.

The person:  Ashley Anne was born on August 13, 1982 in Anaheim, California to her parents Robert and Julie DeLoach…has one older brother…teammates just call her “DeLoach”…junior in the Business Administration field…sports hero is Chipper Jones…loves to eat anything chocolate, and anything not chocolate…cheers for the Atlanta Braves and the LA Lakers…likes the color red and the number 10…favorite movies are “Tommy Boy” and “Tombstone”…enjoys watching “Friends” and “The Bachelor” on TV…hobbies include fishing, snowboarding, eating, sleeping, and making photo albums…would like to meet Jesus…feels hatred is the biggest problem in the world…playing soccer has taught her that hard work and determination pays off because we can do anything in Christ…wants to be a loving wife and mother.

Her thoughts:  I chose VU because I knew this is where God wanted me to be.  I like that it is close to home, and that I have made long-term friendships here.

The athlete:  Victoria returns for her sophomore season for Vanguard…started every game as a freshman…came to VU from Lake Ridge High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon where she was a two-sport HS athlete…team captain and MVP at LRHS…1st-Team All-League, Honorable Mention All-State her senior year in 2002…led her team to two league titles…also competed for the Lake Oswego Soccer Club…has played soccer for 15 years…defender…strong physically…marking back looking for her second season as a starter…good size and solid soccer skills…made good improvements over the summer…works hard at building her game…Lions are expecting and even better year from Lettin.

The person:  Born Victoria Taylor Lettin on August 4, 1984 in Fairfax, Virginia…parents are Robert and Anne Lettin…has an older brother…people call her “Tori” for short…is majoring in Biology…sports hero is Michelle Akers…favorite movies are “Old School” and “Braveheart”…is a fanatic of the Atlanta Braves baseball team…loves the color blue and the number 14…likes the TV sitcom “Friends”…enjoys laughing, hanging out, and going to the beach…would like to meet Will Ferrel…believes that hatred and lying are two of the biggest problems in the world…is looking forward to playing with her new teammates and having a fresh start to the season…has learned from life to be kind to herself…competing in soccer has taught her to be a team player and to be able to work with others…seeks a career as a Physicians Assistant in orthopedics.

Her thoughts: I selected Vanguard because of the welcoming and outgoing community.   I also like being around the Christian atmosphere and so close to the beach.

The athlete:  Khara is back for her second season with the Lions…started in the midfield for the Lions as a freshman…came to Vanguard from Decatur High School in Federal Way, Washington…2002 graduate…was the team MVP and a 1st-team All League, All-City, and All-Area player…spent time competing for the R.C. Royals club team…has played soccer for 15 years…outside midfielder for VU…quick and skillful…feisty, competitive attitude…constant battler who will continue to work on her aggressiveness as she develops her game…working for a starting position again as a sophomore.

The person:  Born Khara Ann Stoneback on June 25, 1984 in Seattle, Washington to her parents Thomas and Tami…youngest of three children…has one niece…is a sophomore academically at Vanguard…nickname is “Billy”…likes to eat “veggies”…sports hero is David Beckham…favorite team is the VU men’s soccer team…likes the color blue and the TV show “Friends”…favorite movie is “Old School”…enjoys reading the Bible, going to the beach, working out, and spending time with friends…loves the number six…would like to meet her future husband…believes dishonesty is the biggest problem in the world…has learned that God has everything planned out and that there is a reason for everything…competing in soccer has taught her about self-discipline, determination, perseverance, and hard work…sees herself as a mother with a career as an Orthopedic Physicians Assistant.

United…has played soccer for 12 years…midfielder with quickness and a workhorse attitude…good with both feet…should earn a starting position as a freshman…will help drive teammates to new heights…works hard every day in every way…young player who plays hard and will get the job done.

The person:  Katherine was born in Ventura, California on June 28, 1985…parents are Tim and Leslie Dynice…has two younger siblings who also play soccer…goes by “Katie”…plans to major in Business at Vanguard…was a scholar-athlete in high school…likes to eat burritos and watch “Friends” on TV…sports hero is Julie Foudy…favorite movie is “Ten Things I Hate About You”…loves the color blue and the number nine…hobbies include playing soccer, hanging out with friends, going to the beach, and eating burritos…believes the biggest problem in the world is that not enough people know Jesus…has learned from life that everything happens for a purpose…playing soccer has taught her about mental toughness and teamwork…would like to become a representative for Nike.

The athlete:  Stacia enters her first collegiate season of competition…played for Coach Crooks at Edison High School prior to enrolling at VU…two-time All-Sunset League selection, first and second team…two-time team MVP at EHS…helped EHS attain two Sunset League Titles and one CIF Championship…played club ball for the Wolfpack Soccer Club…has played for 13 years…right-footed…smart player…smooth and calm with a game that shows few errors…will lead the Vanguard defense early in her career…will gain experience with every collegiate game…has great future with the Lions…look out for Hoover in 2003.

The person:  Born Stacia Noel on October 28, 1984 in Orange, California to her parents Gary and Jeanne Hoover…has one older brother…teammates call her “Stash”…will study Marketing and Theater at Vanguard…favorite athlete is Pete Sampras…loves to eat ice cream…likes to watch “The Simpsons” on TV…favorite movie is “Edward Scissors Hands”…roots for the LA Lakers…loves the color pink…hobbies are eating, surfing, playing soccer, and hanging out…would like to meet Will Ferrel…feels that poverty and hunger are the biggest problems in the world…has learned from life that money isn’t everything, but food is…playing soccer has taught her about dedication…would like to become the head of marketing for Nike, or the next Julia Roberts.

The athlete:  Heather joins the collegiate ranks from Edison High school…played for VU Coach Kerry Crooks at EHS…first team All-Sunset League selection and Best Offensive Player in Sunset League as a senior…helped take EHS to two league championships and one CIF championship…26 goals in final two years of high school…four-sport athlete in high school…played club soccer for the Wolfpack Soccer Club…has played for 11 years…savvy ball handler with a precise shot…will be trouble for opposing defenses…lighthearted off the field…unmatched intensity during a game on the field…can play the midfield or forward positions…will create some exciting moments on the field for the Lions even as a freshmen…look for an outstanding career as a Lion for Hutton.

The athlete:  Jennifer kicks off her collegiate career at Vanguard after a three-sport career at Aliso Niguel High School…played at ANHS for VU men’s coach Randy Dodge…helped her team win two Sea View League Championships and a CIF Division I Championship in 2001…played seven years of club soccer, most recently for the Mission Viejo Soccer Club…marking back who can use either foot well…powerful kick…has the ability to hit accurate long balls to the forwards…willing to do whatever it takes for the team…hard worker with high expectations of herself…young defender coming in with quality experience…could be another freshman to make a big impact.

The person:  Jennifer Lynn was born on October 15, 1985 in Mission Viejo, California to her parents John and Cindy Natoniewski…has a sister and two brothers…people just call her “Jen”…has chosen Exercise Sports Science as a major…favorite movie is “The Little Mermaid”…loves to eat chocolate…likes to watch “The Gilmore Girls” on TV…favorite color is blue…enjoys teaching Sunday school…believes the biggest problem in the world is that not enough people know Jesus…likes how friendly her new teammates are…has learned from life that God is in full control…competing in sports has taught her that hard work is necessary to succeed…wants to become an Athletic Trainer.

The person:  Born Megan Jeanette Swann on June 21, 1985 in Walnut Creek, California…parents are Doug and Robin Swann…has one older sister…has selected Athletic Training as a major…3.6 GPA in high school…sports hero is Mia Hamm….likes to eat salad…loves the color red…favorite number is seven…enjoys watching the TV show “Friends”…favorite movie is “Fast And Furious”…believes terrorism is the biggest problem in the world…has learned from life that things don’t always go the way you want them to…competing in soccer has taught her about teamwork and determination…seeks a profession as an Athletic Trainer.

Lauren Walker

The athlete:  Lauren starts her first year at Vanguard…played for VU men’s coach Randy Dodge at Aliso Niguel High School…2003 graduate…helped ANHS win two Sea View League Championships and one CIF Championship…received the Coaches Award as a senior…has played soccer for seven years…played club ball for the SC Storm Soccer Club…right-footed…marking back…aggressive and never intimidated by the opposition…recently recovered from broken foot…a healthy Lauren could start right away…one of the best defenders on the roster…will only get better with collegiate experience…VU future is bright for Walker.

The person:  Lauren Ashley was born in Victorville, California on October 5, 1985…parents are Guy and Harleen Walker…has two younger sisters…teammates call her “Walker”…will study Exercise Sports Science at VU…4.17 grade point average in high school…sports hero is Shannon MacMillan…favorite movie is “Ten Things I Hate About You”…roots for the San Diego Spirits…loves the color blue and the number three…enjoys going to the beach and volunteering at church…one of her hobbies is taking pictures…would like to meet Shannon MacMillan…thinks poverty is the biggest problem in the world…life has taught her that every thing that happens is all a part of God’s plan…has learned from playing soccer that working hard even when nobody is watching will pay off in the end…would like to become an Athletic Trainer.

The athlete:  Jenifer marks her collegiate debut as a freshman at Vanguard…graduated from Brighton High School in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2003…voted Most Improved Player…had six goals as a senior…was also an All-State track athlete at BHS…plans to run track at VU in the spring…has played soccer for 12 years…good with either foot…quick…will added speed to the overall game of the Lions…willing to sprint the whole game on defense just to get the chance to score the goal…forward with scoring talents and intense presence…growth and results will come by harnessing the intensity into production on the field…Vanguard’s success will depend partially on how that development occurs this season…Zipprich is a big piece of the Lions’ puzzle in 2003.

The person:  Jenifer Lee Zipprich was born on December 12, 1984 in Bozmen, Montana to her parents Ton and Linda Zipprich…has three brothers…will be in the Exercise Sports Science program at Vanguard…loves to eat…favorite TV show is “ER”…loves the number 16…favorite color is purple…loves the VU Women’s Soccer Team…believes that the biggest problem in the world is the lack of love among people…has learned from life that sometimes the best things in life are the hardest to handle…playing soccer has taught her to never give up…wants to be happy in the future.

Her thoughts:  Jenifer picked Vanguard because of the good environment and the small class sizes.

The athlete:  Kayleen will use a redshirt season in 2003…third year on the team at Vanguard…made the All-League team three times in her career at Brethren Christian High School…three sport HS athlete…BCHS soccer MVP her final two seasons…has played soccer since she was five years old…earned a starting position last year as a sophomore for the Lions…strong defender who thrives on one on one situations…has a thigh injury that will not heal properly and has set her back physically…will use 2003 to get healthy while supporting the team.

The person:  Born on August 8, 1983 in Anaheim, California…parents are Allen and Nancy Howard…friends call her “Kay”, family calls her “Leenie”…has two older brothers…studying Psychology at Vanguard…sports hero is Cal Ripken Jr….likes to eat spicy food…favorite movies are “Toy Story” and “Sound of Music”…is an LA Dodger fanatic…favorite TV show is “Oprah”…loves the color yellow and the number 11…enjoys rock climbing, reading poetry, writing, traveling, and fishing…would like to meet Leonardo DaVinci…believes the biggest problem in the world is selfish ambition…likes the new energy and enthusiasm on her team…has learned from life that God wants what is best for us…playing soccer has taught her that pride gets you nowhere…would like to write children’s poetry or work in youth development in the future.

Her thoughts:  Vanguard is a place where I could learn about God, play soccer, be close to my family, and get a degree.  I enjoy the community and having room to grow.
