The athlete: Jenna embarks on her junior year after a sophomore season that saw her lead the team in batting average at .315…started in all 55 games played in 2008 and was second on the squad with 26 runs and 47 hits in 149 at-bats…had a tremendous freshman year that saw her hit .394 in 53 games…started all 53 of her games getting 61 hits, 14 doubles and 29 RBIs while scoring 28 runs in 155 at-bats…attended Tustin High School, graduating in 2006…compiled a 3.6 GPA in high school…four-year varsity softball player at THS…played for Coach Clint Watson…also played two seasons of varsity golf…has played softball for 15 years…played five years of travel softball for the Irvine Sting and Chino Blast teams…bats right…throws right…very solid fundamental player…intelligent player who is always aware of the situation…sets high personal standards…looks for ways to get better on a daily basis…smart hitter with surprising power…decent speed on offense and defense…had shoulder surgery in the offseason, will play a limited defensive role in 2009…consistent hitter…vocal player who is quite competitive…is a member of the VU athletic department’s LIONS…Bergh’s presence and leadership could be a key to VU’s success this season.

The athlete: Melissa rejoins the Lions for her junior season after appearing in 31 games as a sophomore…picked up a pair of wins and had a 1.49 ERA in 11 appearances in the circle…also hit .220 that included 11 hits and a pair of doubles in 50 at-bats….solid both offensively and in the circle…won five games with a team-leading 1.08 ERA in 16 appearances as a freshman…had six starts, five complete games and two shutouts with 41 strikeouts in 2007…also batted .266 with 37 hits, 25 RBIs, a homer and a triple in 139 at-bats…came to Vanguard from Patrick Henry High School in San Diego…attained a 3.33 GPA at PHHS where she played softball for Coach Damon Shaffer in the Eastern League…batted over .450 as a senior, helping PHHS win the 2006 Eastern League Championship…also a part of PHHS’s 2005 CIF Division 2 Championship…second-team All-Eastern League in 2006…has played softball for 15 years…played seven years of club softball with the San Diego Breakers and the San Diego Renegades…bats left…throws left…has good experience and knowledge of the game…smart hitter and crafty pitcher…picks things up quickly…pays attention to detail…understands the game…is coming off offseason elbow surgery…has worked extremely hard to be ready to make a positive impact on the team this season.

Coach Renkoski’s comments: Melissa has been diligent in her rehab program to get prepared for her opportunity to step up for the team in 2009. She is growing and learning to rise to her potential on the field and in the classroom and is beginning to see the results of her work.

APRIL GLENN • #9
JUNIOR • 5-4 • INFIELD • LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA

The athlete: April begins her third season at VUSC after being just one of two in 2008 to play and start in all 56 of the Lions’ games…batted .258 with 41 hits, 26 runs, 17 RBIs and was second on the squad with 15 walks and seven stolen bases…appeared and started in all 57 of the teams’ games as a freshman…had 33 hits, 20 runs, a triple and 14 RBIs in 157 at-bats…team leader in sacrifices with 27, triple that of any other Lion and had eight steals in ten attempts…solid defensively with a .985 fielding percentage with 323 putouts…from Santa Margarita Catholic High School where she graduated in 2006…played high school softball for Coach John Fitzpatrick in the Serra League, making the CIF playoffs in 2006…four-year varsity starter…named Best Defensive Player in 2004…All-League Honorable mention in 2005…Second-Team All-League selection as a senior in 2006…received Varsity Eagles Values Award…named to the North/South All-Star Team…Co-Captain in 2006…has played softball for 15 years, including six at the club level…played for the Rowdeez, Desperados, Sliders, and Beach Girls…bats and throws right…versatile infielder with very solid fundamentals…could play anywhere on the infield for the Lions…good glove and head for the game…quiet competitor…decent speed…understands the game and how to produce offensively…impact player in a variety of ways…is learning to be a stronger leader…will carry a bigger load for the team as an experienced junior returner…will be a key to VU’s success in 2009.

FRESHMAN • 5-3 • OUTFIELD • SAN CLEMENTE, CA

The athlete: Kasey joins the squad as a junior in school having taken two years off from playing softball…graduated in 2006 from San Clemente High School in San Clemente, California where she played for Head Coach Todd Henry…was second-team All-League as a senior and junior…academic award winner all four years…also played three years of club for Storm USA and USA Athletics…bats and throws left…has played for 15 years…natural lefty who is very versatile at the plate…good speed on the bases as well as in the outfield…accurate arm…is ready to continue her softball career with the Lions…prepared to make an immediate impact on the team…intelligent player with high personal expectations…expect to see a lot of Klarenbach in 2009.

The athlete: Kaysie jumps into her second season as a Lion after starting at third base in 36 of 48 games as a freshman…broke a finger on her throwing hand in the last double header of the season…had 17 hits, a pair of triples and seven RBIs as a freshman…came to Vanguard after an award-winning career at Chaparral High School in Temecula, California…played under coach Aaron Slojkowski in the Southwestern conference…All-Valley Honorable Mention, Second-Team All-Southwestern and team’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2007…played six years of club with Victory USA Gold…throws and bats right…has played softball for 14 years…strong player…has worked very hard in the offseason on agility and quickness…infielder who is ready to make a huge impact as a sophomore…good leadership qualities and strong work ethic…competitive attitude with a team-first mentality…willing to play where the team needs her most…has a strong future with the program…expect to see a big year for Flasck.

The athlete: Stephanie rejoins the Lions after starting in 33 of 48 games as a freshman…batted .267 and led the team with a pair of homers in 2008…also had 11 RBIs, five doubles and 24 hits in 90 at-bats…came to VUSC after graduating in 2007 from Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego, California…played for Head Coach Tracy Stowe and was 2004 MVP and 2005 Best Defensive player…batted .315 in the Palomar League…also played basketball…played three years for San Diego Rowdies Gold softball club…bats left and throws right…has played softball for 15 years…catcher with good infield skills…strong arm…has worked on agility for her fielding and has made progress that should show on the field this season…good hitter with power and a good eye…has also worked on developing and expanding her offensive options…has good leadership skills and could make a big impact as a sophomore this season.

The athlete: Patricia rejoins the Lions after a very strong freshman campaign…was 5-1 with a 2.17 ERA in five starts with a pair of shutouts and four complete games in the circle as a freshman in 2008…appeared in the circle 19 times and tied for the team lead with two saves…also batted .255 with 12 hits and three RBIs in 47 at-bats…joined big sister Jennifer on the team in 2008 and got to play one year with her, but is now the only Olvera on the roster…graduated from Gilroy High School in Gilroy, CA in 2007…Second-Team All-League in the Tri-County conference for Head Coach Hallada…also played two years for the Salinas Wildcats…great athlete that also played basketball, golf and tennis…has played softball for ten years…bats and throws right…competitor at heart who loves softball and loves to win…will push herself and teammates to get better…has high personal expectations and is learning how to reach them…used rookie season to gain experience as a pitcher…has worked hard and should be ready to carry a bigger load in 2009…has the opportunity to step up and lead for the Lions as a sophomore…expect to see a new Olvera in 2009.

The athlete: Brittany comes back for season number two after starting in 18 of her 35 appearances as a freshman in 2008…batted .250, scoring eight runs…graduated in 2007 from Bonita High School in La Verne, California…four-year scholar athlete and 2007 All-League performer for Head Coach Darren Baumack…2004 Defensive MVP and 2006 Miramonte All-League Honorable Mention while leading the league in RBIs and being second in home runs…batted .385 her senior season…also played water polo in high school…played three and a half years of club softball with Mirage Gold 18u and Surefire Gold 18u…has played softball for 11 years…bats and throws right...outfielder with decent speed and a strong arm…working hard on a daily basis to refine her outfield skills…determined to improve and succeed in all areas of life…also improving offensively…should have more opportunities to contribute in 2008…knows what to expect after a year of experience…looks out for the team…pushes herself and others to get better…expect to see more from Parlopino in 2009.

The athlete: Angela returns to VUSC for her second year after a stellar freshman campaign…had a team-leading 34 RBIs and 13 doubles…was second on the team with two triples while hitting .307 in all 56 games for Vanguard…joined the Lions for her first season after graduating in 2007 from Lutheran High School in Orange, California…Two-time First-Team All-League performer in the Trinity League for Head Coach Steve Miklos…played two years for USA Athletics…bats and throws right…has played softball for 14 years…experienced catcher with good knowledge of the game…skilled defensively and offensively…will play a big role again for the Lions in 2009…competitive and determined attitude…hates to lose…loves and respects the game…brings a lot to the team and is learning how to make those things more effective…will only get better as she develops the intangible skills…expect another good year behind and at the plate from St. Croix.

The athlete: Amanda starts her second season as a Lion…started in 15 of 40 games played as a freshman in 2008…batted .278 with 15 hits, nine runs and seven RBIs in 54 at-bats…came to VUSC after graduating from Centennial High School in Corona, California…played for Head Coach Brian Everett in the Mountain View League where she was 2007 Second-Team All-League, Team Captain and Offensive Player of the Year…2006-2007 All-League Academic performer…played three years of club softball for the Dynasty Inland Empire…has played softball for since she was three…bats and throws right…versatile player who will play anywhere the team needs her…has a love for the game and works hard to get better…could see time behind the plate, in the outfield, or on the infield as well…strong arm and good fielding skills…is working on consistency at the plate…great teammate with a strong work ethic…puts the team first in all she does on the field…look for an increased contribution for Young in 2009.

The athlete: Libby comes to Vanguard after graduating from Cypress Branch Christian School in Anaheim, California…was home schooled and did not play high school softball…did play 12 years of club softball for the Sharks, Illusion, Gold Coast Extreme and Newport Beach Riptide…has played softball her whole life…bats and throws right…good size and build leads to very much potential…strong arm…infielder who can play both corners…working on defensive footspeed and a quicker release…should improve as she gains experience and adjusts to the collegiate game…has good potential power at the plate…good pick up for the Lions…solid future on the VU Softball field.

The person: Elizabeth was born in Long Beach, California to parents John and Jan on August 14, 1990…has an older sister and a younger brother…plans to major in Kinesiology…loves eating Mexican food and at "BJ’s"…favorite movies are "Remember the Titans" and "The Sandlot" and favorite TV show is "The Office"…says teal is her favorite color and prefers the number 12…says Phil. 4:13 is her favorite Bible verse…roots for the LA Angels and sports hero Chone Figgins…favorite actors are Christian Bale and Sandra Bullock…hobbies include going to the beach and watching movies with friends…most respects her parents because they have always provided for her family and have always supported and encouraged her…softball has taught her perseverance and how to work with other people…would like to become a Physical Therapist for a professional sports team.

The athlete: Amanda comes north to Costa Mesa to join the Lions after graduating from Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, California where she played for Head Coach Erin Coyne…was a first-time D-1 champion as a senior…was an All-League selection…Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year…Rookie of the Year…bats and throws right…has played softball for 13 years…also played soccer where she played eight years of club for the Hot Spurs…gifted athlete…versatile softball player who could play outfield or infield for the Lions this season…loves to play and loves to compete…works hard to get better…shows no fear…good footspeed on defense and offense…will get better with experience but is ready to contribute as a freshman…good softball instincts…should have a good career with the Lions.

The person: Amanda was born in Grossmont, California on April 4, 1990 to parents John and Kelly…has two brothers and one sister…plans to major in Business…loves eating Mexican food at "La Carretas"…favorite movie is "The Goonies" and TV Show is "Friends"…favorite colors are black and yellow and numbers are two, three and nine…roots for the NY Yankees and sports hero Derek Jeter…hobbies include snowboarding, wakeboarding and motorcycles…most respects her brother…says loyalty and trust are the most important characteristics for a person to have…learned that life is a journey, not a destination…softball has taught her about respect and how to trust and work together…would like to own and run her own business.

The athlete: Amanda joins VUSC after coming from Christian High School in El Cajon, California where she played for Head Coach Ronna Dawson in the Eastern League…never missed an inning of play in 110 consecutive games where she was Team Captain of two CIF Div. IV runner-up squads…was a three-year All-Eastern League and All-East County League Selection and two-time Most Defensive Player Award Winner…has played softball for 12 years…batted at least .313 in each of her last two seasons…also played volleyball and golf…played club for the San Diego Storm and San Diego Legacy…bats right and throws right…solid softball skills for a collegiate rookie…soft hands on the infield…could play third or second base for the Lions…is working on adjusting her game to the collegiate level…good potential at the plate…will improve with experience…pretty good speed with solid instincts on the base paths…thoughtful player, continually taking things in…should have a productive freshman season if she makes her opportunities count.

Coach Renkoski’s comments: Amanda has displayed a quiet, but sweet personality in her first semester with the Lions. She is a hard worker and we are looking forward to learning more about her as she gets more comfortable and gains more confidence.

The athlete: Emilee comes to Vanguard after graduating from Sultana High School in Hesperia, California where she played for Head Coach Tracy Zolner…2008 Top Defensive Player of the Year, Team Captain and Second-Team All-League Pitcher…has played softball for 11 years…also played basketball and volleyball…played two years of club with the So Cal Spirit….bats and throws right…may see time as a starter and a reliever…has a great work ethic and great attitude…pretty mature for her age…faces challenges and works hard to overcome them…emotionally balanced with high expectations…should get better with experience…good mentality…her ability to learn, adapt, and respond to the competition will dictate her level of success…future looks bright for Reaber…solid addition to the VU pitching staff.

The person: Emilee was born in Apple Valley, California on April 12, 1990 to parents Kenneth and Lois…has four other siblings…is an undeclared major…nickname is "Reabe"…loves eating her mom’s food, likes Italian…favorite color is pink and number is 12…favorite movie is "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" and TV show is "Heroes"…favorite Bible verse is John 3:16…roots for the New England Patriots and sports hero Tom Brady…loves to shop…most respects her mom because she is the hardest working person ever…says honesty is the most important characteristic for someone to have…learned in life to live every day to its fullest…softball has taught her to be a stronger person…career goal is to be an attorney with her brother.

Her thoughts: I selected Vanguard because I love the Christian environment and the coaches and the girls!

Coach Renkoski’s comments: Emilee has worked very hard to prepare herself for her first collegiate season. We are excited to see how that hard work will pay off and what her future holds on the field and as a person.
