Costa Mesa, Calif. - Orange Coast College’s Coast Classic Track and Field Invitational – Competing in the closest thing to a home meet for the Vanguard University Track and Field teams, the Lions traveled down Fairview Road to the Coast Classic at Orange Coast College for a rare Friday meet. Hoping the forecasts of rain were wrong, the VU Lions, who were out of school for Good Friday, made themselves at home quickly, posting very solid marks early in the competition. Practicing regularly on OCC’s track, multiple individuals set new personal records and VU’s school record in the women’s high jump fell to the current Vanguard Lion track athletes. Although the weather couldn’t decide whether to be warm, cool, sunny or cloudy, the day proved to be beautiful and dry for a pre-Easter meet and overall it was a productive day for the Lions at Orange Coast College.

Davis captures VU Women's Highlights
Junior Kelsie Davis won the women's high jump and broke the VU school record in the process, clearing 5'6" (former VU record held by NAIA nationals competitor Beth Weidler 5'4 1/4" 2002). Davis' mark bettered her previous best of 5'3 3/4" by two and one-quarter inch. It also bettered the NAIA provisional national qualifying height of 5'5" and was just 1/4 inch shy of the automatic standard (5'6 1/4"). Her mark is currently tied for 3rd in the NAIA and will convert to an automatic mark if it stays in the top-16.

Freshman Chelsea Van Cott ran 11:50.75 in her 3000 meter steeplechase debut to finish third. Van Cott's mark was just three seconds off the provisional national qualifying standard. Freshman Emily Canales also ran her first career steeplechase and finished 6th in 12:16.14.

Competing in one of the few non-jumping field events for the Lions, junior Heidi Morehouse cleared 9'6" to finish 4th in the pole vault.

In the sprinting events for the Lions, the women's 4x100 relay team of Allie Armando, Diana Neves, Kaylee Leadley and Basia Mosley raced to a 6th place finish in 51.39. The Lions also had several sprinters in the 100m and 200m events. See Vanguard’s individual results below.
