Lions Shut Out Soka
The Vanguard Lions improved to 3-3-1 this evening with a 4-0 victory over host Soka University in men's soccer nonconference action. Traveling the short distance to Aliso Viejo, the visiting Lions posted a 4-0 shutout against Soka.
Sophomore Adam Holstein collected two of VU's four goals and Celestino Diaz registered the first two assists of the evening, while junior Trevor Herrera earned the shutout in goal for the Lions.
Junior Victor Tapia took a Diaz pass 18 mininutes into the contest and deposited it into the Soka goal for a 1-0 lead. With just under 10 minutes left in the half, Holstein doubled VU's lead with his first goal of the game.
Holding a 2-0 lead at the half, the Lions did not let up in the second half. Tomislav Colic set up VU's third goal when he assisted Holstein for his second goal of the game less than 10 minutes into the final period. The Lions piled on one more insurance goal with 14 minutes to play as senior Eric Nutter got into the scoring column, receiving a pass from junior Ryan Kenney.
Tonight's victory puts the Lions back on the winning track while preparing the rest of the week for their GSAC opener this Saturday when the Lions host Azusa Pacific in both teams' GSAC opener. The Cougars are 6-0 and ranked No. 2 in the NAIA.
