Costa Mesa, Calif. - The Vanguard Lions hosted California Baptist today in their first home GSAC double header of the season. The Lancers posted an 11-5 victory in game one and completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory in the seven-inning nightcap.

VU’s Richard Jessup and CBU’s Cory Allen pitched their teams to a scoreless tie after two full innings before the Lancers combined four consecutive hits to take a 2-0 lead over Jessup and the Lions. But the biggest blow for the Lancers came in the fourth when CBU chalked up a six-run rally, off Jessup and reliever Matt Curtis. The Lions had to call in their third pitcher of the inning, Jordan Oseguera, to get the final out.

The Lions finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with Derek Craddock ripping a one-out triple, and scoring on an RBI single by Zack Falk. Vanguard added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings as well, with Mike Anderson driving in a run and Craddock scoring on a CBU error.

Trailing 11-3 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Lions plated two more runs on back-to-back triples by Jacob Wood and Eric Krzysiak. However, it would not be enough as Joseph Ferreira and Julian Arballo pitched the final two innings for CBU and completed the victory for Allen, who pitched eight innings and allowed nine hits and five runs with six strikeouts.

VU senior Chris Carls (0-1) took the hill for the Lions in game two, giving up an unearned run in the top of the second inning. Brett Siegmund homered to lead off for the Lions in the second inning, tying the score 1-1. However, the Lancers added lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-1 advantage over the Lions. CBU put the finishing touches on the sweep with a five-run seventh off of VU reliever Shane Day.

Siegmund had two of VU’s six hits in game two as the Lions drop to 1-7 overall. Krzysiak led Vanguard with three hits, a run, and an RBI on the day, while Craddock and Nick Akins had two hits each for the Lions.

CBU pounded out 22 hits on the day and improves to 12-2 overall and 5-2 in GSAC with today’s sweep.

Vanguard is back in action next Wednesday when the Lions host Concordia University in a 2:00 p.m. GSAC game.
