Costa Mesa, Calif. – Coming off a disappointing trip to Kansas last weekend, the Vanguard Lions were looking forward to a successful return to their home field this evening. Taking on Orange County rival Chapman University in a nonconference battle, the Lions played well but still left the field unsatisfied after a 1-1 tie with the Panthers. Combining to play 109 scoreless minutes in the double overtime contest, the teams traded goals within a one-minute span of the second half to complete all of the scoring for the entire game.Vanguard out-shot the visiting Panthers 4-0 in the first half, but CU goalkeeper Tyler Hadzinsky notched a pair of saves to send the teams into intermission in a scoreless tie.
The Lions came close to scoring three minutes into the second half with a shot by Scott Falkner hitting the post but not finding the net. However, junior Landon Herrera substituted into the game in the 63rd minute of play and things got more interesting from there. Ten minutes later, Herrera connected on a close-range shot in traffic for the first goal of the game off a cross pass from Celestino Diaz.
VU’s 1-0 lead did not last long however, as the Panthers responded less than a minute later with the game-tying goal by Matt Prouty. VU goalkeeper Cody Adams came out from the goal to punch away a Panther cross pass, with the ball bouncing more than 20 yards out in front of the goal. Prouty was the first to reach the ball, placing it perfectly to the left of a retreating Adams who could not quite reach the shot.
With the game tied at one goal apiece, the teams tried in vain to break the stalemate. Neither team had a shot on goal in the two 10-minute overtime periods, leaving the score still knotted after 110 minutes of play. Adams tallied one total save with only one of Chapman’s seven shots being on goal, while Hadzinsky recorded five saves against 12 total shots for Vanguard.
Chapman slides to 4-1-1 and the Lions move to 2-3-1 with the tie. Vanguard will play its final nonconference game at Soka University next Tuesday, with a 7:00 p.m. scheduled start.
