We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mike Beals will be the new Dean of Spiritual Formation at Vanguard University!
With over 30 years of full-time ministry under their belts, Mike Beals ’81, MA ’89 and his wife Faith had a very strong sense of God’s guidance and felt strongly led to accept our invitation to return to Vanguard. Mike completed both his BA and MA at Vanguard, and later served as an adjunct faculty member from 1991 to 2005 and an Assistant Professor in the School of Religion from 2005 to 2009. As a professor, Dr. Beals was known as a passionate and caring professor.
Mike and Faith have been married for 33 years. They have two beautiful daughters and a fabulous son-in-law: Caleb Stewart ’08. His daughters are thrilled that their dad is going to be a Dean at the school he loves so much.
Faith and Mike were married when he was still an undergrad student (August before junior year), so Faith loves the Vanguard University community just as much. Faith is especially gifted in areas of hospitality and mentoring. She was born and raised on the mission field and shares a strong passion for justice, education, and serving local churches. They have been blessed to minister the gospel together in such diverse international contexts.
The Beals family loves the beach, sailing, sushi, watching action/adventure movies, and playing gin rummy (Faith’s an ace). Whenever he gets a chance, you’ll find Mike in or on the water, reading in a coffeehouse, dreaming one day he will play the cello like Yo-Yo Ma, or playing the upright bass in hopes to play Jazz bass like Ray Brown.
Mike came to faith in Christ at Vallejo First Assembly of God in 1977. Though he initially pursued pre-med at San Diego State University, he sensed God calling him to Vanguard. While at Vanguard, Mike completed a double-major in Religion and Psychology. His MA at Vanguard was in Church Leadership.
Mike continued his education and completed a second MA at Fuller Theological Seminary in Biblical Studies and Theology. He earned his Ph.D. at Fuller in Christian Ethics. His dissertation title was “Toward a Constructive Pentecostal Perspective of the Just War Tradition: New Direction for the Moral Migration of the Assemblies of God,” completed in June 2002.
Mike is an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God and has spent the past 26 years in ministry at Mission Hills Community Church in Rancho Santa Margarita, the last 23 of those as Senior Pastor. Mike has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Fuller Seminary since 1999. In addition to scholarly involvement in the Society for Pentecostal Studies, Mike has been actively involved in global outreach in Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, China, Israel, Switzerland, France, England, and Scotland.
Please pray for Mike and Faith as they make their transition to Vanguard and say farewell to beloved friends at Mission Hills Community Church. Mike began his duties at Vanguard on a transitional basis on August 1 and on a full-time basis beginning in October.
Send Dr. Mike Beals an encouraging email to email@example.com
We have experienced many blessings at Vanguard University. Having Mike join us as Dean of Spiritual Formation is a particularly rich blessing as so many here already know and appreciate him and look forward to serving with him as we equip each student for a Spirit-empowered life of Christ-centered leadership and service.
