Talent Show Booms with Applause, Laughs and Vocals

IMG_20140218_170152Singing, guitar strumming and juggling debuted on the Newport Mesa Church (NMC) stage Thursday night for the Vanguard University Talent Show.

The show’s winners walked away with baskets of goodies from every type of Vanguard paraphernalia to a $50 Disneyland gift card. Winners were freshmen Aly Carness and Nathan Dorado in first place for their performance of the Civil War’s Barton Hallow and freshman Stratton Harrison in second place for his juggling comedian act. Also, a notable mention went to the guys from Newport 204 for their original kazoo song: Jesus the Nazarene.

A red carpet and tables topped with treats led to the NMC doors. Students in line grabbed raffle tickets, root beer floats and small brown bags to fill with sweet and salty snacks. The pre-show fun didn’t stop with treats; the night also featured student Jared Miller crafting balloon animals and characters by the entrance for attendees. Despicable Me Minions, elephants, turtles, crazy hats and various other balloon creations entered with attendees. Once inside, students found their seats and waited for the night’s MCs to start the show.

Show competitors faced the crowd and three judges: associate athletic director Nolan Steputis, professor Karen Nishie and student life administrative assistant Jordan Baker. Judging on the basis of originality, talent and wow-factor, the judges privately wrote varying scores on their papers, while always being encouraging over the microphone. The audience applauded and gave shouts of support for all competitors; however, standout performances received roaring applause and standing ovations.

It was an evening filled with smiles, laughter and singing. After the show, multiple students rushed back outside to line up for one of the biggest talents that was not featured in the show: Jared Miller and his balloon creations.
