On Theater: Eggington, Milgrim set pace in 2011

The late playwright Horton Foote influenced the choices of both individual artists who stood above the crowd in local theater in 2011.

Foote wrote the play “A Trip to Bountiful,” the movie version of which won its star, Geraldine Page, an Oscar in 1985. He also penned the screenplay for Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” which guided Gregory Peck to Hollywood gold in 1962.

Today, two performers who recently assumed these familiar roles on local stages, stand to be applauded once again. They are Paul Eggington and Lynn Milgrim, the Daily Pilot’s Man and Woman of the Year in Theater for 2011.

Davis collects No.400
by Barry Faulkner
December 28, 2011

FULLERTON — After watching his team roll the metaphorical boulder up the hill against scrappy Montana Tech on Wednesday, Vanguard University women’s basketball coach Russ Davis ultimately was able to celebrate a milestone.

The Lions, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, played with all the rust that its 25-day holiday layoff had produced. Their wire-to-wire lead became tenuous in the closing seconds, but they held on for a 62-58 triumph in the opening round of pool play at the Biola Holiday Classic at Hope International University.

Campus Update December 2011

This is undoubtedly my favorite time of year. The air is crisp; the campus is filled with a blend of excitement and race to the finish as the fall semester comes to an end and we all get to celebrate the Christmas season with friends and family.

To kick off the Christmas season, I want to personally invite you to Vanguard’s 15th annual Christmas Fantasia concert. We offer two performances, one at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on December 1 and another at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on December 2. Your spirit will soar as you watch Vanguard’s talented music department sing Christmas carols and get you in the Christmas spirit. For more information please click here.

Our Global Center for Women and Justice department has also been active this semester creating a number of community events that bring awareness and reflection on suffering and abuse and our call to serve compassionately. The GCWJ hosted a Solidarity Sleep Out where Vanguard students and community members spent the night away from the comfort of their homes to raise awareness about homelessness. To learn more about the Solidarity Sleep Out please visit www.solidaritysleepout.org

I continue to be thankful for the compassionate students we have here at Vanguard. Many of our students will be participating in missions trips this December.  One example of how Vanguard students will be serving is at a Children’s Christmas Party, which provides food and gifts to over 300 children in need. For more information, please click here.

This semester we also celebrated the opening of our renovated Towers Lobby with its new outdoor patio space.  We dedicated the new space with our Board of Trustees and then celebrated with our students. This is part of a larger project to renovate Huntington Hall, one of our oldest dorms on campus. This summer we completed renovation of the second floor and are continuing to seek funds to complete all floors of the dorm. For a video clip and photos of the new lobby space, please click here.

As all of us prepare to honor the birth of Jesus this Christmas season, it reminds me of all that I have to be thankful for this past year. Vanguard has been blessed so much that it is a true testament to God’s hand on Vanguard and the great plans He has in store for the University. I want to wish all of you a wonderful Christmas during this joyous time of year.

God Bless you and God Bless Vanguard,

Dr. Carol Taylor
President

Rick Warren and Saddleback Church partner with Vanguard to educate church planters

Saddleback Church is partnering with Vanguard University to offer a Master of Theological Studies (MTS) through the Saddleback Leadership Academy. The new venture is designed to equip the next generation of church leaders. Saddleback Leadership Academy is a key element of Pastor Rick Warren’s 10-year vision to start culturally relevant churches in strategic cities around the world.

Students enrolled in the Saddleback Leadership Academy for a one-year internship may enroll in Vanguard University’s Graduate Religion Program and earn 18 of 48 units toward the MTS degree on site at Saddleback. They complete 30 units of theology on campus at Vanguard.

Vanguard Provost Jeff Hittenberger says: “Vanguard shares Saddleback’s Christ-centered vision. The MTS/Church Planting program offers students who have already earned their undergraduate degree a chance to prepare for ministry and earn their Master’s degree in just four semesters compressed into 15 months. A student starting the program in May 2012 can be finished by August 2013.”

The Saddleback Church Leadership Academy seeks to equip, empower, and encourage individuals to pursue their calling to church planting or ministry leadership. According to Dave Alford, Director of the Leadership Academy, “The partnership with Vanguard will allow us to offer future church ministry leaders thorough, practical training in an accelerated format. We’ll be able to get qualified leaders into ministry faster.”
