Vanguard University Hosting Jazz Festival

On Saturday, March 5, from 9am to 5pm, Vanguard University will host the Vanguard University Jazz Festival, an event providing an opportunity for jazz bands to be adjudicated by world-class, professional musicians and perform at a college venue where they will also be introduced to Vanguard’s renowned Department of Music and the university’s jazz director, Dr. Ken Foerch.

The festival, which is open to students in grades 6-12, will feature a variety of schools, including Arrowhead Christian Academy, Linfield Christian School, Brethren Christian School, West Valley Christian High School and Santa Fe Christian School. While each school will be competing with each other for awards, they will also have the opportunity to learn from professionals during jazz clinics and workshops.

“We are excited to share a little piece of Vanguard with the local junior high and high school communities and hope they will come away from this festival excited and anticipating their future both academically and musically,” says Coordinator of Music Events and Concert Operations, Luke Baumgartner.

As an exciting finale to the festival, the Vanguard University Jazz Ensemble will be performing at Newport Mesa Church at 4pm for an “Evening of Jazz” – a free event that will be open to the public and to the entire Vanguard community.

“The jazz festival is going to be great,” says Baumgartner. “When you get this many quality jazz musicians together there is something cool that happens. The music and love for music really forms a great community and some of the relationships made at this festival will last musicians their entire professional careers.”

Men’s and Women’s Basketball Senior Night

On Friday, February 25, Vanguard’s Men’s and Women’s basketball teams will honor their seniors as they take the court against GSAC rival The Masters College for one last home game.

A total of four seniors from the men’s team will be honored as they play in the “Pit” for the final time. Guard Landon Plumier, guard Drew Bruns, post Josh Sandberg and post Alex Chapman will all be recognized for all the contributions they have brought to the basketball program as they lead the charge for the Lions, who will be fighting for playoff positioning in what will hopefully be a resounding victory.

Plumier, the only four-year member of the squad, has been one of the Lion’s strongest leaders for the past few years. Bruns, a fixture in the program for three years, has established himself a reputation as one of the most dangerous 3-point artists in the GSAC. Sandberg, also in his third year with the Lions, has been known for his incredible heart and intensity no matter the situation. And finally, Chapman has been the Lions’ standout player this year while leading the team in both scoring and rebounding.

Three seniors from the women’s team will be celebrated for all they have done to continue the legacy of greatness one has become accustomed to seeing from the women’s program. Guard Danielle Arriola, post Molly Pfohl and guard Sarah Boyd will lead the way for the Lions as they aim to win their final regular season home game.

Ariolla, in her first year at Vanguard, has brought a lot of leadership and experience to a young team. Pfohl, a four-year player, has developed into one of the top players in the GSAC while leading the team in both scoring and rebounding. Lastly, Boyd, another four-year player, who leads the team in assists and is second in scoring, has brought an incredible amount of leadership, experience and hustle to the Lions in her four years here.

Vanguard University is honored to have had all of these great players and people take part in its athletics programs. Each of these seven student athletes has been an integral part of the VU community and an asset to their respective programs.

The Intercollegiate Athletic Program at Vanguard University is dedicated to the holistic growth and development of all student athletes, teaching them to lead Christ-centered lives on and off the field of competition. The program encourages a high standard of academic and athletic excellence that embraces character building.

Chaplain, Captain David Sarmiento ’99, alumni of Vanguard University, has just been formally recognized as the Chaplain of the Year for the Air National Guard of the United States and was awarded the Samuel Stone Award. Sarmiento was picked out of a group of eight nominees representing well over 300 Chaplains from across the United States and US territories and is the first Hispanic American to receive the award.

Sarmiento received the Samuel Stone award for his outstanding support for military families whose loved ones are deployed all around the world and for providing pastoral care to the 24 hour Predator Operation missions. Sarmiento has officiated well over 200 wing-related functions that include retirements, conferences, briefings, seminars, weddings and change of commands while also being involved in death notifications, funerals and Fallen Angel Ceremonies. He has exemplified the very best of the Chaplain Corps Values of glorifying God, serving airman and pursuing excellence.

The Samuel Stone Award is named for the late Chaplain Samuel Stone who was the first recorded chaplain to serve in the militia of colonial America. The annual winner is an officer selected based on training accomplishments or contributions to mission support, exhibition of leadership in contributing to civic, cultural or professional activities in the military or civilian community, and enrollment in off-duty programs of professional self-improvement.
