Campus Update February 2012

It is a blessing to have the campus filled with students again as the spring semester is in full swing. Their energy and excitement makes me thankful for Vanguard and what God has planned for this spring.

Please join us Friday, February 24 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm in Newport-Mesa Church, as Dr. Jörg Haustein from the University of Heidelberg, Germany will be speaking at the annual Lewis Wilson Institute Seminar. Dr. Haustein received the John Templeton Award for young international scholars for his dissertation on the Historiography of Ethiopian Pentecostalism. The Lewis Wilson Institute for Pentecostal Studies seeks to encourage and support the study of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements by serving as a conference and research center for scholars, church leaders, students and others interested in probing the historical significance and contemporary global role of Pentecostalism and the Charismatic movements. Our Vanguard athletes are part of the Champions of Character program and their passion for sports and ethics on and off the court makes me proud of the talented students we have here at Vanguard. For more information on our athletic department, please visit www.vanguardlions.com.

Lastly, I want to encourage you to please save the date for our Global Center for Women and Justice conference, “Ensure Justice: Standing Together to End the Exploitation of Girls” March 2nd and 3rd. Campus Update January 2012

Greetings and best wishes this New Year! I hope your Christmas season was filled with many blessings and this New Year is full of promise. We have some great things happening this spring, and I am excited for the year ahead.

It is a blessing to have the campus filled with students again as the spring semester is in full swing. Students arrived back on campus in early January and their energy and excitement makes me thankful for Vanguard and what God has planned for this spring.

Our Undergraduate Admissions office is already diligently working on recruiting our fall 2012 students. We have many events this spring to introduce the Vanguard campus and community to potential students. On January 9, we hosted an onsite acceptance event and on January 20 there will be a campus visit day for potential students to visit the campus, meet current students and enjoy a day of fellowship.

If you haven’t had a chance to attend an athletic event at Vanguard, I urge you to go to an upcoming men or women’s basketball game this spring. Our Vanguard athletes are part of the Champions of Character program and their passion for sports and ethics on and off the court makes me proud of the talented students we have here at Vanguard. I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate our Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Russ Davis, on his 400th career win as the Lions won against Montana Tech at the Biola Holiday Classic.  Coach Davis has coached our women’s basketball program for 15 years, and has led the Lions to numerous championships, including one NAIA National Championship.  For more information on our athletic department, please visit www.vanguardlions.com.

Our Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), a non-profit organization educating people on issues like market economics, entrepreneurship, and business ethics through educational outreach projects, will be hosting their annual event on February 10th.  Each year, Vanguard students actively participate in this event to help bring positive change to the business world.  For more information on our Green Conference, please click here.

Vanguard is also looking forward to our annual Homecoming on February 10th and 11th. Each year it is wonderful to welcome back Vanguard alums, hear their stories, and see the impact Vanguard had on their lives. Our alums live out the mission of Vanguard around the globe in the many ways they provide Christ-centered leadership and service.

I am delighted to share with you that our English Professor, Dr. Karen Lee appeared on the cover of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, a national publication on diversity in higher education.  Dr. Lee was selected as one of twelve emerging scholars who are making their mark in the academy.  Her story provides a clear and winsome testimony of her faith.  To read her story and find the link to the magazine, please click here.

OC Music Awards 2012: Vanguard Student Tully James Wilkinson

Celebrating its 11th anniversary, the OC Music Awards kicks off on January 3rd with seven weeks of free showcases at different venues across the county. 35 local artists will compete for the titles of Best Live Band or Best Live Acoustic and a performance slot at the 2012 OC Music Awards, March 3 at the Grove of Anaheim. And, the voting is open now!

Meeting Tully James Wilkinson at a coffee shop for his interview seems àpropos considering the young, good-looking English major (his favorite author is C.S. Lewis), singer-songwriter, and college student got his musical start playing in coffee shops.

Even though he has naught but a demo out, with a nod from the OC Music Awards and a House of Blues show under his belt, “discovering” Wilkinson at a coffee shop certainly paid off in more than caffeinated highs for the performer–regardless of how “taxing” playing “two hour sets for not that much feedback” might understandably become.

But not so “taxing” that the struggle of being a full-time student, “working two or three jobs to pay for stuff,” and being “pretty busy” doesn’t make Wilkinson feel energized by a sense of accomplishment.

“Playing shows at night kind of makes you come alive,” said Wilkinson, sincerely. “So it’s all worth it in the end.”

Vanguard University to Discontinue Aquatic Program

Vanguard University has announced the discontinuation of its aquatics program, which includes men and women’s swimming and men and women’s water polo beginning with the 2012-13 academic school year.

Bob Wilson, Athletic Director, states “The Vanguard University Athletic Program is committed to excellence in pursuit of our mission by providing a quality collegiate experience for our student athletes.  We have concluded that the logistics of the aquatics program do not allow for us to do so at this time.  Therefore, the decision has been made to remove aquatics from the Vanguard University Athletic Program.”

All aquatic student athletes that had eligibility remaining and who desire to return to Vanguard University to continue their education will be granted the same amount of athletic financial aid for the 2012-13 academic year as was provided for the student athlete in the 2011-12 academic year.   Other institutional aid (academic, institutional need based funds and loans) will be honored as long as each student athlete has submitted their FASFA by March 2, 2012 and continues to meet the criteria established for that aid.  Beyond the 2012-13 academic year, each student athlete will be asked to meet with the Director of Financial Aid to determine their financial aid package.

Student athletes who wish to continue their aquatics careers elsewhere will receive the full support and assistance of the Vanguard athletics staff in their transfer. Vanguard University aquatic teams will complete the 2011-2012 season.

Vanguard University Athletics sponsors 13 intercollegiate sports and is a Champions of Character program participant and award winner.  For more information about Vanguard University athletics, visit www.vanguardlions.com
