Vanguard Alums Maureen and Gene Rickman Premiere Christian Musical

Vanguard University alums Maureen Rickman ’89 and Gene Rickman ’90 have been doing big things since they graduated from Vanguard.

Now the music pastor at Pacific Christian Center, Maureen has been presented with an exciting opportunity for her and her children’s choir to premiere the Dove Award winning Celeste Clydesdale’s new Christmas musical for 2011 entitled “The Great Christmas Giveaway.” Rickman, affectionately called Pastor Moe by most of her church member, and her choir will also be traveling to Universal City to premiere it at MusiCalifornia, the largest Christian music conference on the west coast.

“I have loved and performed many of Clydesdale’s musicals over the years and to be asked to work with her and her equally respected husband David T. Clydesdale is a total God thing,” says Rickman. “This is a dream God gave me many years ago and to see it come true shows you that God still specializes in things thought impossible!”

Gene taught in the classroom for 16 years before deciding to continue his education and receive his Administrative Services Credential. He has been a vice principal for four years and is currently at Lakeview junior high, where he has also added District Testing Coordinator to his title and in which he oversees all state, federal, and local mandated testing for the Orcutt Union School District. Gene is also a key member in Maureen’s music ministry as he helps her in a variety of capacities and makes her visions of set designs become a reality.

Vanguard Alum Reba Toney Enjoying New Career Path

Vanguard alum Reba Toney ’03 has a TV show, a new book, and a job as a new spokeswoman for “Dreams” by Neihule Nail Lacquer and Salon.

After finding out that she was suddenly out of a job as the morning co-host on “The Family Friendly Morning Show with Bobby Shaw and Reba Toney” on Christian music station KFSH/95.9 FM, “The Fish”, she decided to turn that negative into a positive.

Toney has continued to move forward on her new career path and looks to the future. She is currently focusing on “Top 3,” her twice-weekly young adult talk show that is carried on TBN affiliate JCTV and on www.JCTV.org. She is also speaking around the county on relationship issues with regards to her recently published book, The Rating Game and its website, the ratinggamebook.com. In The Rating Game, Toney gives readers a “fun system” to assess their compatibility with others. Finally, Toney is enjoying her new spokeswoman position for “Dreams,” a beauty product featured in the highly-desired gift bag at the Oscars this year.

Toney has strong ties to Orange County as she attended Vanguard University. “I loved Vanguard,” said Toney. “The professors were always very knowledgeable. It was good training.”

Toney was the World Vision Radio Personality of the Year in 2006 and 2007, and traveled with World Vision to Ethiopia to garner support for the Aids and Children relief campaign. She has also traveled to Ecuador with a relief organization and raised over $75,000 for aid to the Latin America radio campaign, while also raising nearly $100,000 through KKLA for Hope Gardens, a group home for single moms and their children in downtown Los Angeles.

Vanguard Chapter of American Chemical Society to Host Undergraduate Social

The student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) at Vanguard University has been asked to host the Undergraduate Social Event at the 241st National American Chemical Society Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA. The event is scheduled to take place March 27, 2011 from 8:30-11:00 pm.

Hosting the Undergraduate Social Event is a great opportunity for Vanguard’s student chapter of ACS. “It is a big honor that our student group was asked to this, especially in light of the fact that our group is young, only being established in 2008,” says faculty advisor of the student group, SAINTS, Dr. Tara Sirvent.

With more than 163,000 members, the ACS is the world’s largest scientific society and one of the world’s leading sources of authoritative scientific information. As a nonprofit organization chartered by Congress, ACS is on the frontline of the constantly evolving chemical enterprise and the premier professional home for chemists, chemical engineers and related professions around the globe. The National American Chemical Society Annual Meeting will feature nearly 9,500 presentations that encompass all of science, from astronomy to zoology.

“It should be a lot of fun,” says senior Sara Gunter, the chairwoman heading the committee and organization of the event. “We want to make it exciting for students and celebrate chemistry at the same time! We are planning an international theme since 2011 is designated as the International Year of Chemistry,” says Gunter.

For anyone interested in helping planning the event, organizational meetings are on Fridays at 10:00 am in Science Room 1. All interested students are welcome to attend.

UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCEMENT: Delivery Boys & Entourage

Dear Vanguard Community –

I would like you to be aware that the Entourage and Delivery Boys Programs are being suspended at this time. The decision to suspend the programs was reached by President’s Cabinet and affirmed by me after careful and prayerful review.

The University remains committed to nurturing student talent teams that serve churches and their youth. Student talent teams (e.g. worship bands, vocal ensembles, drama troupes) have a rich legacy of participation in both churches and youth camps. Vanguard will strive to connect student talent with local churches and camps. Entourage and Delivery Boys are a valued part of Vanguard’s legacy. The University leadership will continue to evaluate outreach programs that are relevant to today’s church.

I want to personally thank the current team members and all camp team alumni for sharing your talents over the years. I look forward to a new direction in using a broad range of student talent in ministry.

With appreciation,

CAROL A. TAYLOR, PhD
President
