Is Grad School for you?
Whenever I tell someone who just has a Bachelors degree that I work in Graduate Admissions, they either express their interest in getting a Masters someday or say something like "I went to school for 16 years...I'm done!" Well, I wanted to take a moment to list some reasons that people attend grad school so that those of you who relate to the second person will at least understand grad students a little better.
1. There are no general education requirements - you get to just focus on your own field of study, which is hopefully something you love.
2. There are fewer tests in graduate school. Instead, you do more research and writing! (Okay, I admit that I enjoy writing, so maybe this is just a good point for someone like me.)
3. Classes are generally based more on discussion than on lecture, which makes them more interesting and engaging.
4. Through grad school work, you can develop clearer career goals and a greater motivation for doing more intensive work in the field of your choice.
5. A graduate degree is clearly more prestigious than an undergraduate degree - it can enhance your resume significantly.
6. Those with a master's degree almost always earn higher salaries than those with a bachelor's degree.
7. For those who haven't been to school in many years, earning a master's degree in a new field can be the perfect way to make a career transition.
These are just a few of the many reasons that graduate school can be beneficial to your future.
Happy Thursday!
