Baptized in the Holy Spirit
"Pentecostalism, for all of its talk about the Holy Spirit, lacks a pneumatology. Yet, Frank Macchia is convinced that its focus on Spirit baptism can provide a way forward toward a more robustly pneumatological treatment of various systematic theological loci, such as Christology, soteriology, and ecclesiology. In this ground breaking work, Macchia offers a compelling and creative foundation for pneumetological thinking in the twenty-first century by expanding the central distinctive of Pentecostal theology, the baptism in the Holy Spirit."
"At last. This is the book by Frank Macchia we have been waiting for, a comprehensive, balanced, and highly readable recasting of Christian theology that finally assigns the Holy Spirit an appropriate role. Furthermore, this book is truly global in reach, in keeping with the current sweep of the Pentecostal-Charismatic movement around the world. Macchia has a stunning grasp of the relevant material, deploys it judiciously, and adds his own voice in a persuasive but eloquent way. This book will now occupy a prominent place in the next phase of the wider Christian theological enterprise." Harvey Cox, Professor of Divinity, Harvard University.

Called and Empowered: Global Mission in Pentecostal Perspective (Co-authored with Murray W. Dempster and Byron D. Klaus.)
"Called and impowered documents the fact that Pentecostalism has come of age. What many hoped and some feared has happened: Pentecostal scholars from the USA, Latin America, Africa, and Europe are not just bathing in the glory of ther missionary successed, but they are beginning to analyze its missionological, theological, political, and ecumenical implications. This is an important and promising beginning of a new type of pentecostal theologizing. I hightly recomment this volume to all critics and admirers of Pentecostalism as well as to the Pentecostals and Charismatics. Walter J Hollenweger, Professor Emeritus of Mission at the University of Birmingham.
"...an unprecedented mix of pentecostal theology and mission practice, virtually a manifesto for pentecostal missions in the nineties, indispensable for thoughtful Pentedostals as well as for students of the twentieth-century pentecostal explosion. This is the fullest and finest missiological treatise originating within classical Pentecostalism available to date." Russell P. Spittler, Professor of New Testament and Direcitor of the David du Plessis Center of Christian Spirituality at Fuller Theological Seminary.

The Future of Pentecostalism in the United States. Edited by Eric Patterson and Edmund Rybarczyk
"One hundred years after the Azusa Street Revival stunned Los Angeles and changed Western Christianity, Pentecostalism has become the fastest growing religious movement in the world. However, many Pentecostal denominations in the United States are in a slow decline. Will Pentecostalism survive in North America in the twenty-first century? If so, what forms will it take? The Future of Pentecostalism in the United States brings together leading scholars of charismatic and Pentecostal Christianity to discuss and forecast these issues. The book looks at American Pentecostalism from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including sociology, theology, history, and the arts."
"In The Future of Pentecostalism in the United States Eric Patterson and Edmund Rybarczyk have gathered a stellar cast of scholars to ponder the future of the movement in the nation of its birth. This history in reverse gives Pentecostals a discerning critical, and prophetic view of the movement as it enters its second century. This valuable book should be required reading for American Pentecostals and Charisma tics as well as for Christians of all traditions who wish to understand this vast and complex movement. Vinson Synan, Regent University.

Defeating Pharisaism
"The presence of Pharisaism (legalism, dogmatism, separatism, judgmentalism, hypocrisy, etc.) in contemporary evangelical churches is hindering effective outreach, burning out professional and lay leaders, and chasing away a generation of young, emerging adults toward either no church affiliation at all, or to churches that, in their attempt to be culturally relevant, may be guilty of compromising the gospel. This book makes the point that the key to defeating Pharisaism is to disciple people the way Jesus did-by proactively steering church members away from Pharisaism while at the same time introducing them to the life of the Kingdom. Thus, it is not necessary to choose between fundamentalism and a new liberalism. By using the Sermon on the Mount as a disciple-making curriculum, and a version of John Wesley's system of interlocking groups as the delivery method, contemporary evangelical church leaders can cultivate a disciple-making experience and environment that mitigates the presence of Pharisaism while steering congregation members toward a more grace-oriented (and gracious) approach to the spiritual life." (From the back cover of Defeating Pharisaism)
"Don't be misled! This book is not a tirade against the Pharisees. That would be pharisaism of the worst kind! Rather, with meticulous scholarship and penetrating insight, Gary Tyra provides both a historical basis for the development of the Pharisaic tradition confronted by Jesus as well as an analysis of the psychological/social emergence of the Pharisaic temperament among contemporary evangelical churches. As I read this book, and fascinating exploration of Matthew's gospel with a focus on the Sermon on the Mount, I envisioned Jesus nodding as if to say, "You've got it right. This is what I meant by becoming an authentic Kingdom-disciple!" Those who read this book will find a fresh and invigorating approach to discipleship-making that exposes and avoids the anxiety and fear-driven impulse toward legalistic perfectionism. They will also discover a practical and biblically-based curriculum for teaching and preaching a gospel of discipleship that is pleasing to God and graceful to behold." Ray S. Anderson, Senior Professor of Theology and Ministry, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA
