Requirements: To become a member of a Lambda Pi Eta chapter, a student must:
- have completed at least 60 semester units in college;
- have completed at least 12 semester units of communication study;
- have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0;
- have a GPA of at least 3.25 in communication courses;
- display commitment to the field of communication
Once a student is inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, he or she is a member for life. If a member were to no longer meet the academic requirements for membership (such as falling below a cumulative 3.0 GPA), the student may NOT be removed from the Society. Additionally, a student does not have to be "full-time" in order to be inducted into the society. Download LPE membership here.
Special Requirements for the membership of Transfer and Communication Minors
Transfer students: Students who are members of Lambda Pi Eta and transfer to another school which has a Chapter will automatically be a member of that school’s chapter. In order to ensure academic achievement, local chapters have the option of increasing the national requirements listed above for transfer students who wish to be new members of Lambda Pi Eta.
Communication Minors: Students pursuing a minor in communication or communication studies may be inducted into Lambda Pi Eta if they fulfill all of the academic requirements above. Students must have completed at least 12 semester hours in communication courses.
Lambda Pi Eta – Pi Upsilon Chapter
About Lambda Pi Eta: Lambda Pi Eta (LPH) is the official undergraduate National Communication Honor Society of the National Communication Association (NCA). As an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), Lambda Pi Eta has nearly 400 active chapters at colleges and universities worldwide.
History: Lambda Pi Eta was founded in 1985 at the University of Arkansas. Lambda Pi Eta became a part of the National Communication Association (NCA) in 1988, and the official honor society of the NCA in July 1995. Lambda Pi Eta’s Pi Upsilon chapter at Vanguard University received its charter on February 9, 2004.
Background: Lambda Pi Eta represents what Aristotle described in his book, Rhetoric, as the three ingredients of persuasion: Logos (Lambda) meaning logic, Pathos (Pi) relating to emotion, and Ethos (Eta) defined as character credibility and ethics.
Goals: The goals of Lambda Pi Eta are to:
- recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement;
- stimulate interest in the field of communication;
- promote and encourage professional development among communication majors;
- provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about the field;
- establish and maintain close relationships and understanding between faculty and students;
- explore options for further graduate studies.
Why Join? Though achievement is its own reward, earning your Lambda Pi Eta honor society pin and certificate demonstrates that you have accomplished something that makes you special and puts you at the top of your chosen field. Having an honor society listed on your resumé provides a tangible sign of your academic success.
Dues: To become a member of Lambda Pi Eta, a one-time only membership fee of $48.00 is required. Deadline: while applications are accepted at ANY time, in order to become a member during this academic year, your application & payment must be received no later than February 15. Expectations of members: Members of Lambda Pi Eta will be added to an e-mail list and are expected to attend the spring induction ceremony. Members are welcome to invite their friends and family members to attend. During the induction ceremony, members will be sworn in and presented with their membership certificate and Lambda Pi Eta pin. Members will receive e-mails and mailed invitations providing specific information for each year’s induction ceremony.
